Condition

Some customers may comment that the key is stuck in the ignition switch or the shifter will not move in or out of park.

Cause

The shifter shaft may be catching on the plastic circular boss inside the shifter knob.

Correction

DO NOT REPLACE THE TRANSMISSION SHIFTER ASSEMBLY, IGNITION SWITCH, SHIFT CABLES OR MAKE SHIFT CABLE ADJUSTMENTS.

Object Number: 1704949 Size: SF

Use the procedure below to add a chamfer to the boss. This will prevent the shifter shaft from getting hung up on the edge of the boss.

  1. Remove the shift knob.
  2. Inspect the plastic (white) shifter shaft to make sure it moves freely. If the key can be removed from the ignition switch, the shifter is operating properly.
  3. Use the following procedure to put a chamfer on the boss surface:
  4. 3.1. Place a 3/8" drill bit inside the shifter knob.

    Object Number: 1704871 Size: SF
3.2. Measure and mark 2 mm (0.08 in) from the end of the shifter knob.

    Object Number: 1704873 Size: SF
3.3. Using a piece of 15 mm (1/2 in) hose as a stopper, slide the hose onto the drill bit to the 2 mm (0.08 in) mark.
3.4. Turn the shifter knob upside down and place in a vise to hold it for drilling.

Notice:  Because of the plastic material, the use of air tools to drill the circular boss may drill out the hole more than 2 mm (0.08 in) and could cause damage to the spring internal to the shifter knob. This may result in the need to replace the shifter knob.

3.5. CAREFULLY (air tools not recommended) drill the black plastic circular boss inside the shifter knob just enough (2 mm [0.08 in]) to put a chamfer on the surface.
  5. Thoroughly clean out all plastic shavings from inside the shifter knob.
  6. Reinstall the shifter knob and test for proper operation.
