Rear Brake Caliper Replacement J65, JL9

Caution: Refer to Brake Dust Caution in the Preface section.

Caution: Refer to Brake Fluid Irritant Caution in the Preface section.

Notice: Refer to Brake Fluid Effects on Paint and Electrical Components Notice in the Preface section.

Removal Procedure

  1. Inspect the fluid level in the brake master cylinder reservoir.
  2. If the brake fluid level is midway between the maximum-full point and the minimum allowable level, no brake fluid needs to be removed from the reservoir before proceeding.
  3. If the brake fluid level is higher than midway between the maximum-full point and the minimum allowable level, remove brake fluid to the midway point before proceeding.
  4. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  5. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.

  7. Release tension from park brake system at the equalizer.

  8. Object Number: 717002  Size: SH
  9. Disconnect the front and rear cables from one another at the connector clip (2).
  10. Disconnect the park brake cable from the park brake lever on the brake caliper.
  11. Remove the park brake cable from the caliper bracket.

  12. Object Number: 420701  Size: SH
  13. Remove brake hose to caliper bolt .
  14. Remove the brake hose from the brake caliper.
  15. Remove and discard the 2 copper brake hose gaskets. These gaskets may be stuck to the brake caliper and/or the brake hose end.
  16. Plug the opening in the brake caliper and brake hose to prevent fluid loss and/or contamination.
  17. Remove the brake caliper bolts.
  18. Remove the brake caliper .

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 105774  Size: SH
  1. Align the indents on the piston face to match the pin on the brake pad.
  2. Inspect the bracket bolt guide assembly. Refer to Rear Disc Brake Hardware Replacement .
  3. Inspect the brake pad hardware and replace if necessary.
  4. Install the brake caliper onto the caliper bracket insuring that the guide boots are not damaged.
  5. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  6. Install the brake caliper bolts.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the brake caliper bolts to 34 N·m (25 lb ft).

  8. Remove the plugs in the brake hose end.
  9. Important: Install NEW copper brake hose gaskets.

  10. Assemble the brake hose bolt and the NEW copper brake hose gaskets to the brake hose.

  11. Object Number: 420701  Size: SH
  12. Install the brake hose to caliper bolt to the brake caliper.
  13. When installing the right rear brake hose to caliper, hold hose up while tightening.

    Tighten
    Tighten the brake hose to caliper bolt to 44 N·m (33 lb ft).

  14. Install the park brake cable into the park brake bracket on the caliper.
  15. Connect the park brake cable to the park brake lever on the brake caliper.

  17. Bleed the brake system. Refer to Hydraulic Brake System Bleeding in Hydraulic Brakes.
  18. With the engine OFF, gradually apply the brake pedal to approximately 2/3 of its travel distance.
  19. Slowly release the brake pedal.
  20. Wait 15 seconds, then repeat steps 12-13 until a firm brake pedal is obtained. This will properly seat the brake caliper pistons and brake pads.
  21. Adjust the park brake system. Refer to Park Brake Adjustment in Park Brake.
  22. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  23. Lower the vehicle.

Bolt, Brake Hose Fitting

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

Tighten
54 N·m (40 lb ft)

Fitting, Brake Hose

Tip
Cap or plug the brake hose fitting and the open inlet port of the brake caliper to prevent fluid loss and contamination.

Gasket, Brake Hose Fitting (Qty: 2)

Tip
DO NOT reuse the brake hose fitting gaskets. Install NEW gaskets.

Bolt, Brake Caliper Guide Pin (Qty: 2)

Tighten
34 N·m (25 lb ft)

Tip

  1. Bleed the hydraulic brake system. Refer to Hydraulic Brake System Bleeding .
  2. With the engine OFF, gradually apply the brake pedal to approximately 2/3 of its travel distance.
  3. Slowly release the brake pedal.
  4. Wait 15 seconds, then repeat steps 2-3 until a firm brake pedal is obtained. This will properly seat the brake caliper pistons and the brake pads.
  5. Fill the master cylinder reservoir to the proper level. Refer to Master Cylinder Reservoir Filling .
  6. Burnish the pads and rotors. Refer to Brake Pad and Rotor Burnishing .
