Info - Re-Learning Additional (Spare) Key(s) to BCM after BCM Service

Subject:Re-Learning Additional (Spare) Key(s) to BCM after BCM Service

Models:2004 Pontiac Grand Prix

The Grand Prix is equipped with PassKey III® as a vehicle theft deterrent system. The system controls are integrated into the BCM. This is different from most other PassKey III® applications where there is a separate theft deterrent control module.

When servicing the BCM, if a BCM is replaced or reprogrammed for any reason, the new or reprogrammed BCM will learn the first key it reads. ANY OTHER KEYS PREVIOUSLY LEARNED FOR THAT VEHICLE WILL BE LOST AND MUST BE RELEARNED . If this procedure is not performed on the additional key(s), a no-start condition may occur and/or security message may display when using the additional key(s).

DO NOT REPLACE THE BCM.

The other/spare key(s) must be learned by the BCM. Use the following procedure to learn any/all additional keys:

Important:

   • You may add up to 10 additional keys using this procedure when a learned master key is available.
   • This procedure adds keys only. The procedure does not erase previously learned keys.
   • The keys to be learned must duplicate the mechanical cut of the current key.

Additional Key Learn Procedure:

  1. With a previously learned master key, turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Turn OFF the ignition and remove the key.
  3. Within 10 seconds, insert the key to be learned. Turn ON the ignition with the engine OFF. The vehicle has now learned the new key.
  4. Repeat steps 1-3 for all additional keys.

Important: If the customer does not have both sets of keys available at the time of vehicle service, this procedure could easily be performed by the customer at a later time. If you attach a copy of the Additional Key Learn Procedure to the repair order and have the dealership cashier or service advisor explain it, most customers could perform this procedure at home, avoiding a return trip to the dealership.
