Water Inside Rear Spoiler (Remove Spoiler, Remove Tape and Add Drain Holes)

Subject:Water Inside Rear Spoiler (Remove Spoiler, Remove Tape and Add Drain Holes)

Models:2000-2001 Pontiac Grand Prix
With Rear Spoiler (RPO D81)
Built Prior to VIN Breakpoint 1F134432

Condition

Some customers may comment that there is water inside the rear spoiler.

Cause

Object Number: 760402 Size: SF

Masking tape used to cover the blow molded vent holes (2) during certain manufacturing processes may not have been removed. Over a period of time, exposure to the elements along with the heating and cooling of the air inside the spoiler may cause moisture outside the spoiler to be drawn through the masking tape and up into the spoiler.

Correction

Important: For additional information on rear spoiler removal & installation (including torque specifications), see the Body Rear End sub-section of Body & Accessories in the appropriate Service Manual.

  1. Remove the rear spoiler from the vehicle.
  2. Inspect for the presence of masking tape (2) over the two blow-molded vent holes and remove if found.
  3. Important: When drilling the holes in the next step, use a drill bit travel stop set to a depth of 6.35 mm (1/4 in) to avoid drilling into or through the top surface of the spoiler. If a drill bit stop isn't available, install a piece of 6.35 mm (1/4 in) inside diameter vacuum hose over the drill bit leaving only 6.35 mm (1/4 in) of the drill bit tip exposed.

  4. Remove water by drilling a 6.35 mm (1/4 in) diameter hole at the locations shown (1) on the bottomside of the spoiler at each end.
  5. After the holes are drilled, tip the spoiler as necessary to allow any water inside to drain out through the holes.
  6. Important: Before reinstalling the spoiler on the vehicle, clean any dirt from the deck lid surface and the bottomside of the spoiler. Check the paint on the deck lid for any marks, scratches or indentations that may be coming from the raised lettering on the center bottomside (3) of the spoiler. If there is any paint damage present, touch-up as necessary using the information found in the appropriate Service Manual and the GM Refinish Material Booklet # 4901M-D-2001 (English) or #4901M-D-F2001 (French). To prevent any further paint damage, apply a piece of 3M® double-coated (sided) foam tape #6397, or equivalent, over the raised lettering on the bottomside of the spoiler. The tape will insulate the deck lid from any further contact with the lettering.

  7. Install the spoiler on the vehicle and tighten.
  8. Tighten
Tighten the retaining nuts to 6 N·m (55 lb in).
