The Powertrain Control
Module (PCM) is the control center of the vehicle. The PCM controls the following
components:
• | The fuel metering system |
• | The transaxle/transmission shifting |
• | The on-board diagnostics for the powertrain functions |
The PCM constantly looks at the information from the various sensors,
and controls the systems that affect the vehicle performance. The PCM also
performs the diagnostic function of the system. In order to help the technician
make repairs, the PCM can perform the following functions:
• | Recognize operational problems |
• | Alert the driver via the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) |
• | Store the diagnostic trouble codes that identify the problem areas |
The type of PCM in this vehicle is a PCM 32U. The knock sensor
module is no longer a separate component. The PCM contains integrated knock
sensor (KS) diagnostic circuitry. For more information on the integrated
