Cleaning Procedure
Notice: Cap the fittings and plug the holes when servicing the fuel system in
order to prevent dirt and other contaminants from entering the open
pipes and passages.
Important: When you flush the fuel tank, treat the fuel and water mixture as a
hazardous material. Handle the material in accordance with all
local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
Important: When you clean the fuel tank, you must inspect the fuel pump fuel strainer.
If the fuel pump fuel strainer is contaminated, replace the fuel pump
fuel strainer, and inspect the fuel pump.
Important: Always maintain cleanliness when you service the fuel system components.
- Relieve the fuel system fuel pressure. Refer to
Fuel Pressure Relief

- Drain the fuel tank. Refer to
Fuel Tank Draining
.
- Remove the fuel tank. Refer to
Fuel Tank Replacement
.
- Remove the fuel sender assembly. Refer to
Fuel Sender Assembly Replacement
.
- Inspect the fuel pump inlet for dirt and for debris. If you find
dirt or debris, replace the fuel pump.
- Flush the fuel tank with hot water.
- Pour the water out of the fuel sender assembly opening in the
fuel tank. Rock the fuel tank in order to ensure that the removal of the
water from the fuel tank is complete.
- Allow the tank to dry completely before reassembly.
- Install the fuel sender assembly. Refer to

- Install the fuel tank. Refer to
Fuel Tank Replacement
.
- Add the fuel, and reinstall the fuel tank filler pipe cap.
- Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to
Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection
in Engine Electrical.
- Inspect for leaks.
13.1. | Turn ON the ignition, for 2 seconds. |
13.2. | Turn OFF the ignition, for 10 seconds. |
