Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle Floor Shift

Disassembly Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 21854-01 Pivot Pin Remover
    • J 41688 Centering Sphere Installer
  1. Remove the lock module assembly. Refer to Electronic Column Lock Module - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .
  2. Remove the tilt spring only. Refer to Tilt Spring - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .

  4. Remove the 2 pan head screws (1) from the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly (2).
  5. Remove the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly (2).

  6. Object Number: 368504  Size: SH
  7. Remove the steering shaft seal (1).
  8. Remove the sensor retainer (2) from the adapter and bearing assembly.

  9. Object Number: 322997  Size: SH
  10. Remove the lower spring retainer (1) from the steering shaft assembly.
  11. Dispose of the lower spring retainer (1).
  12. Remove the lower bearing spring (2) from the steering shaft assembly.
  13. Remove the lower bearing seat (3) from the adapter and bearing assembly (4).
  14. Remove the adapter and bearing assembly (4) from the steering shaft assembly.

  16. Remove the 2 pivot pins (3) from the steering column tilt head assembly (1) by using J 21854-01 .

  17. Object Number: 322998  Size: SH
  18. Install the tilt lever into the steering column tilt head assembly.
  19. Pull back on the tilt lever and at the same time pull the steering column tilt head assembly down and away from the steering column.
  20. Remove the steering column tilt head assembly with the steering shaft assembly (1) from the steering column support assembly (2).
  21. Remove the tilt lever.

  23. Remove the steering shaft assembly (2) from the steering column tilt head assembly (1).
  24. Important: Mark the race and upper shaft assembly and the lower shaft assembly before disassembly. Failure to assemble the race and upper shaft assembly and the lower shaft assembly correctly will cause the steering wheel to be turned 180 degrees.

  25. Tilt the race and upper shaft assembly (1) 90 degrees to the lower shaft assembly (2).
  26. Disengage the race and upper shaft assembly (1) from the lower shaft assembly (2).

  27. Object Number: 299885  Size: SH
  28. Insert the race and upper shaft assembly (1) into J 41688 .
  29. Rotate the driver 90 degrees in the counterclockwise direction in order to disengage the centering sphere.
  30. Remove the shaft preload spring from the centering sphere.
  31. If necessary, discard the old centering sphere and the old joint preload spring.

  33. Remove 4 torx head screws (2) from the steering column support assembly (1).
  34. Dispose of the 4 torx head screws.
  35. Remove the steering column support assembly (1) from the steering column jacket assembly.

Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle Column Shift

Disassembly Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 21854-01 Pivot Pin Remover
    • J 41688 Centering Sphere Installer Tool
  1. Remove the lock module assembly. Refer to Electronic Column Lock Module - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .
  2. Remove the tilt spring assembly only. Refer to Turn Signal and Multifunction Switch Assembly - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .

  4. Remove 2 pan head tapping screws from the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly.
  5. Remove the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly.


    Object Number: 324919  Size: SH
  6. Remove the electrical BTSI actuator.
  7. Use a screwdriver to pry the electrical BTSI actuator from the steering column jacket assembly.

  8. Object Number: 324921  Size: SH
  9. Remove 3 flat head 6-lobed socket tapping screws from the linear shift assembly.
  10. Remove the linear shift assembly.


    Object Number: 324925  Size: SH
  11. Remove the steering shaft seal (6).
  12. Remove the sensor retainer (5).
  13. Remove the lower spring retainer (4).
  14. Dispose of the lower spring retainer (4).
  15. Remove the lower bearing spring (3).
  16. Remove the lower bearing seat (2).
  17. Remove the adapter and bearing assembly (1).

  19. Remove the electrical BTSI actuator from the steering column.
  20. Use a small screwdriver to pry the electrical BTSI actuator from the steering column jacket assembly.

  22. Remove 3 flat head 6 lobed socket tap screws from the linear shift assembly.
  23. Remove the linear shift assembly from the steering column.

  24. Object Number: 324933  Size: SH
  25. Remove 2 pivot pins from the steering column support assembly with J 21854-01 .

  26. Object Number: 324937  Size: SH
  27. Install the tilt lever and tilt the column to the upright position.
  28. Remove the upper tilt head assembly with the steering shaft assembly.

  29. Object Number: 324936  Size: SH
  30. Remove the steering shaft assembly (1).
  31. Important: Mark the race and upper shaft assembly and the lower shaft assembly to ensure proper assembly. Failure to assemble properly will cause the steering wheel to be turned 180 degrees.


    Object Number: 295954  Size: SH
  32. Tilt the race and upper shaft assembly 90 degrees to the lower shaft assembly and disengage. If necessary, remove and discard the old centering sphere and spring.

  33. Object Number: 299885  Size: SH
  34. Insert the race and upper shaft assembly (1) into J 41688 .
  35. Rotate the driver 90 degrees in the counterclockwise direction in order to disengage the centering sphere.
  36. Remove the shaft preload spring and the centering sphere from J 41688 .
  37. If necessary, discard the old centering sphere and the old joint preload spring.

  38. Object Number: 299877  Size: SH
  39. Remove 4 torx head screws from the steering column support assembly (2).
  40. Dispose of the 4 torx head screws.
  41. Remove the steering column support assembly (1) from the steering column jacket assembly (3).
  42. Inspect the steering column for accident damage. Refer to Steering Column Accident Damage Inspection - Off Vehicle .
