Starter Replacement 3100 L82 (VIN M)

Removal Procedure

Caution: This vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause the following conditions:

   • Air bag deployment
   • Personal injury
   • Unnecessary SIR system repairs
In order to avoid the above conditions, observe the following guidelines:
   • Refer to SIR Component Views in order to determine if you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring.
   • If you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System.

Caution: Before servicing any electrical component, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF, unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. If a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

Important: The starter motor on this vehicle is not serviceable and must be replaced as a complete unit.

  1. Disconnect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
  2. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  3. Remove the electrical connections (6, 9, 10) at the starter motor.

  5. Remove the torque converter cover. Refer to Torque Converter Cover Replacement in Automatic Transaxle -- 4T60-E.

  6. Object Number: 45668  Size: SH
  7. Remove the starter bolts and the starter motor. Remove the shims, as needed.

Installation Procedure

The 3100 L82 (VIN M) uses a PG260 F1 starter motor.

  1. Verify the correct starter motor is being installed.
  2. Install any removed shims and the starter motor to the engine.

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the starter bolts.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the starter bolts to 43 N·m (31.7 lb ft).

  5. Install the torque converter cover. Refer to Torque Converter Cover Replacement in Automatic Transaxle -- 4T60-E.

  7. Install the electrical connections at the starter motor.
  8. Tighten

        • Tighten the starter solenoid BAT terminal nut (8) to 10 N·m (89 lb in).
        • Tighten the starter solenoid S terminal nut (7) to 3 N·m (27 lb in).
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10. Connect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .

Starter Replacement 3800 L36 and L67

Removal Procedure

The 3800 L36 (VIN K) uses a PG260 F2 starter motor.

The 3800 L67 (VIN 1) uses a PG260 M starter motor.

  1. Verify the correct starter motor is being installed.
  2. Install any removed shims and the starter motor to the engine.

  7. Install the electrical connections and the nuts to the starter motor. The 3800 L36 (VIN K) starter motor wiring shown, the 3800 L67 (VIN 1) is similar.
  8. Tighten

        • Tighten the starter solenoid BAT terminal nut (6) to 10 N·m (89 lb in).
        • Tighten the starter solenoid S terminal nut (5) to 3 N·m (27 lb in).
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10. Connect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
