Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement Left Front

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Drain the coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
  3. Lower the vehicle.
  4. Remove the left (front) spark plug wires. Refer to Spark Plug Wire Harness Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  5. Remove the thermostat bypass hose and pipe.
  6. Remove the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve from the left (front) valve rocker arm cover.

  7. Object Number: 61833  Size: SH
  8. Remove the left (front) valve rocker arm cover bolts.
  9. Remove the left (front) valve rocker arm cover.
  10. Remove the left (front) valve rocker arm cover gasket.
  11. Clean the valve rocker arm cover.
  12. Clean the valve rocker arm cover gasket sealing surfaces on the cylinder head and the lower intake manifold.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install a new left (front) valve rocker arm cover gasket.

  2. Object Number: 190588  Size: SH

    Important: Apply sealant GM P/N 12345739 or equivalent at the cylinder head to lower intake manifold joint.

  3. Apply sealant at the cylinder head to lower intake manifold joint at the rear of the lower intake manifold (1).

  4. Object Number: 190589  Size: SH

    Important: Apply sealant GM P/N 12345739 or equivalent at the cylinder head to lower intake manifold joint.

  5. Apply sealant at the cylinder head to lower intake manifold joint at the front of the lower intake manifold (1).

  6. Object Number: 61833  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  7. Install the left (front) valve rocker arm cover.
  8. Hand tighten the left (front) valve rocker arm cover bolts.

    Tighten
    Tighten the valve rocker arm cover bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  9. Install the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve to the left (front) valve rocker arm cover.
  10. Install the thermostat bypass hose and pipe.
  11. Install the left (front) spark plug wires. Refer to Spark Plug Wire Harness Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  12. Fill the engine with coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.

Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement Right Rear

Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  2. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  3. Remove the generator. Refer to Generator Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  4. Remove the generator bracket. Refer to Generator Bracket Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  5. Remove the right (rear) spark plug wires. Refer to Spark Plug Wire Harness Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  6. Remove the ignition coil bracket with the coils, the purge solenoid and the vacuum canister solenoid. Refer to Ignition Control Module Replacement and Evaporative Emission Canister Purge Solenoid Valve Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.1L.
  7. Remove the vacuum hose from the grommet in the right (rear) valve rocker arm cover.

  8. Object Number: 61834  Size: SH
  9. Remove the right (rear) valve rocker arm cover bolts.
  10. Remove the right (rear) valve rocker arm cover.
  11. Remove the right (rear) valve rocker arm cover gasket.
  12. Clean the valve rocker arm cover.
  13. Clean the valve rocker arm cover gasket sealing surfaces on the cylinder head and the lower intake manifold.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install a new right (rear) valve rocker arm cover gasket.

  2. Object Number: 190589  Size: SH

    Important: Apply sealant GM P/N 12345739 or equivalent at the cylinder head to lower intake manifold joint.

  3. Apply sealant at the cylinder head to lower intake manifold joint at the rear of the lower intake manifold (1).

  4. Object Number: 190588  Size: SH

    Important: Apply sealant GM P/N 12345739 or equivalent at the cylinder head to lower intake manifold joint.

  5. Apply sealant at the cylinder head to lower intake manifold joint at the front of the lower intake manifold (1).

  6. Object Number: 61834  Size: SH

  7. Install the right (rear) valve rocker arm cover.

    Tighten
    Tighten the valve rocker arm cover bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  9. Install the vacuum hose to the grommet in the right (rear) valve rocker arm cover.
  10. Install the ignition bracket with coils, the purge solenoid and the vacuum canister solenoid. Refer to Ignition Control Module Replacement and Evaporative Emission Canister Purge Solenoid Valve Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.1L.
  11. Install the right (rear) spark plug wires. Refer to Spark Plug Wire Harness Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  12. Install the generator bracket. Refer to Generator Bracket Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  13. Install the generator. Refer to Generator Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  14. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  15. Connect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
