Exhaust Manifold Replacement Left Front

Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  2. Remove the throttle body air inlet duct.
  3. Drain the engine coolant from the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
  4. Remove the right engine mount strut bracket. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Bracket Replacement .
  5. Disconnect the radiator inlet hose from the engine. Refer to Radiator Inlet Hose Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  6. Remove the thermostat bypass pipe.
  7. Remove the exhaust crossover pipe heat shield. Refer to Exhaust Crossover Replacement .
  8. Remove the exhaust crossover pipe bolts to the left (front) exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Crossover Replacement .

  10. Remove the left (front) exhaust manifold heat shield bolts.
  11. Remove the left (front) exhaust manifold heat shield.

  12. Object Number: 96301  Size: SH
  13. Remove the left (front) exhaust manifold nuts.
  14. Remove the left (front) exhaust manifold.
  15. Remove the left (front) exhaust manifold gasket.
  16. Clean the left (front) exhaust manifold to the left (front) cylinder head sealing surfaces.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 96301  Size: SH
  1. Install the left (front) exhaust manifold gasket.
  2. Install the left (front) exhaust manifold.
  3. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Install the left (front) exhaust manifold nuts.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the left (front) exhaust manifold nuts to 16 N·m (12 lb ft).

  6. Install the left (front) exhaust manifold heat shield.
  7. Install the left (front) exhaust manifold heat shield bolts.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the left (front) exhaust manifold heat shield bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  9. Install the exhaust crossover pipe bolts to the left (front) exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Crossover Replacement .
  10. Install the exhaust crossover pipe heat shield. Refer to Exhaust Crossover Replacement .
  11. Install the thermostat bypass pipe. Refer to HVAC.
  12. Connect the radiator inlet hose to the engine. Refer to Radiator Inlet Hose Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  13. Install the right engine mount strut bracket. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Bracket Replacement .
  14. Fill the cooling system with engine coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
  15. Install the throttle body air inlet duct.
  16. Connect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.

Exhaust Manifold Replacement Right Rear

Removal Procedure

  1. Disconnect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  2. Remove the throttle body air inlet duct.
  3. Drain the engine coolant from the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
  4. Disconnect the radiator inlet hose at the engine. Refer to Radiator Inlet Hose Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  5. Remove the thermostat bypass pipe.
  6. Remove the exhaust crossover pipe heat shield. Refer to Exhaust Crossover Removal .
  7. Remove the exhaust crossover pipe bolts to the right (rear) exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Crossover Removal .
  8. Disconnect the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) wiring harness connector.
  9. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  10. Remove the three-way catalytic converter pipe from the right (rear) exhaust manifold. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement in Engine Exhaust.

  12. Remove the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) tube from the rear exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.1L.

  14. Remove the right (rear) exhaust manifold upper heat shield bolts.
  15. Remove the right (rear) exhaust manifold upper heat shield.

  16. Object Number: 61831  Size: SH
  17. Remove the right (rear) exhaust manifold lower heat shield bolts.
  18. Remove the right (rear) exhaust manifold lower heat shield.

  19. Object Number: 61923  Size: SH
  20. Remove the right (rear) exhaust manifold nuts.
  21. Remove the right (rear) exhaust manifold.
  22. Remove the right (rear) exhaust manifold gasket.
  23. Clean the right (rear) exhaust manifold to the right (rear) cylinder head sealing surfaces.

  25. If replacing the right (rear) exhaust manifold remove the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S). Refer to Heated Oxygen Sensor Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.1L.

Installation Procedure

  1. If removed, install the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S). Refer to Heated Oxygen Sensor Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.1L.

  2. Object Number: 61923  Size: SH
  3. Install the right (rear) exhaust manifold gasket.
  4. Install the right (rear) exhaust manifold.

  8. Install the right (rear) exhaust manifold lower heat shield.
  9. Install the right (rear) exhaust manifold lower heat shield bolts.
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the right (rear) exhaust manifold lower heat shield bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  11. Install the right (rear) exhaust manifold upper heat shield.
  12. Install the right (rear) exhaust manifold upper heat shield bolts.
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the right (rear) exhaust manifold upper heat shield bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  14. Install the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) tube to the rear exhaust manifold. Refer to Engine Controls -- 3.1L.
  15. Connect the three-way catalytic converter pipe to the right (rear) exhaust manifold. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  16. Lower the vehicle.
  17. Connect the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) wiring harness connector.
  18. Install the exhaust crossover pipe bolts to the right (rear) exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Crossover Replacement .
  19. Install the exhaust crossover pipe heat shield. Refer to Exhaust Crossover Replacement .
  20. Install the thermostat bypass pipe.
  21. Connect the radiator inlet hose at the engine. Refer to Radiator Inlet Hose Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  22. Fill the cooling system with engine coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
  23. Install the throttle body air inlet duct.
  24. Connect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
