INSIDE DOOR HANDLE TO DOOR TRIM CONTACT (RELOCATE INSIDE HANDLE; RPL TRIM IF NECESSARY)
Customer comments of marks or scuffing on door trim panels rearward of inside door handles on 1988 Grand Prix vehicles may be due to the inside handle contacting the door trim panel when opening the door.
This condition may be repaired by using the following procedure:
1. Remove door trim panel.
2. Using a 3/16" drill bit, drill out the inside handle upper attaching rivet.
3. Carefully pry the handle assembly away from the lock module backing plate, enough to install a 1/4" standard nut (5 mm thick) to be used as a shim between the handle and module back plate and position the nut in place.
4. Reattach the handle to module back plate using a 3/16" X 3/8 grip range pop (R) rivet, GM P/N 2477054, Emhardt #SD66BSLF, (or equivalent).
Parts are currently available from CANSPO.
5. Reinstall door trim as required.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
