Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 28467-360 Engine Support Fixture

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Recover the air conditioning (A/C) refrigerant. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging in HVAC Systems with A/C - Manual.
  3. Drain the cooling system. Recover the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
  4. Install the J 28467-360 .

  6. Remove the engine mount assembly. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement .
  7. Remove the engine mount bracket support.
  8. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  9. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.4L.
  10. Remove the throttle body tube.
  11. Disconnect the power steering liner at the power steering pump.

  13. Loosen the top 2 air conditioning (A/C) compressor bolts.
  14. Remove the generator. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  15. Remove the generator bracket.
  16. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  17. Remove the right front tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  18. Remove the right front splash shield. Refer to Wheelhouse Splash Shield Replacement in Body Front End.
  19. Remove the flywheel inspection cover.
  20. Remove the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement .
  21. Remove the drive belt tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement .
  22. Disconnect the right wheel speed sensor connector and the wire harness from the suspension support.
  23. Remove the right ball joint. Refer to Lower Control Arm Ball Joint Replacement in Front Suspension.
  24. Remove the right stabilizer shaft from the right suspension support and the right control arm.
  25. Remove the suspension support.

  27. Remove the A/C compressor to oil pan bolts.

  29. Remove the oil filter.
  30. Remove the oil filter adapter. Refer to Oil Filter Adapter Removal .
  31. Drain the engine oil.
  32. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  33. Remove the oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan Replacement .

  35. Remove the crankshaft sensor. Refer to Camshaft Position Sensor Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.4L.
  36. Remove the lower front cover bolts.
  37. Lower the vehicle.
  38. Remove the coolant bypass to coolant pump and the manifold. Refer to Heater Hoses Replacement in HVAC Systems with A/C - Manual.
  39. Remove the radiator hose to coolant outlet housing. Refer to Water Outlet Housing Replacement in Engine Cooling.

  41. Remove the front cover bolts.
  42. Remove the front cover.
  43. Remove the front cover oil seal. Refer to Crankshaft Front Oil Seal Replacement .
  44. Clean the mating surfaces of the following items:
  45. 38.1. The front cover
    38.2. The oil pan
    38.3. The cylinder block
  46. Clean the sealing surfaces using degreaser.

Installation Procedure

    Important: Do not damage the sealing surfaces.

  1. Install the front cover gasket.
  2. Apply sealer to both sides of the lower tabs of the front cover gasket. Use GM RTV sealer GM P/N 1052080 or an equivalent.
  3. Install the front cover oil seal. Refer to Crankshaft Front Oil Seal Replacement .

  5. Place the front cover on the engine.
  6. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  7. Install the upper 2 front cover bolts (2).
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 21 N·m (15 lb ft).

  9. Install the radiator hose to coolant housing. Refer to Water Outlet Housing Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  10. Install the coolant bypass pipe to coolant pump and the manifold. Refer to Heater Hoses Replacement in HVAC Systems with A/C - Manual.
  11. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  12. Install the lower front cover bolts.
  13. Tighten

        • Tighten the small bolts (1) to 21 N·m (15 lb ft).
        • Tighten the large bolts (2) to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).

  14. Install the crankshaft sensor. Refer to Camshaft Position Sensor Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.4L.
  15. Install the oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan Replacement .
  16. Install the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  17. Install the oil filter.

  19. Install the A/C compressor to oil pan bolts.
  20. Install the stabilizer shaft to the right suspension support and to the control arm.
  21. Install the right ball joint. Refer to Lower Control Arm Ball Joint Replacement in Front Suspension.
  22. Connect the right wheel speed sensor connector and the wire harness to the suspension support.
  23. Install the drive belt tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement .
  24. Install the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement .
  25. Install the flywheel inspection cover.
  26. Install the right splash shield. Refer to Wheelhouse Splash Shield Replacement in Body Front End.
  27. Install the right front tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  28. Lower the vehicle.

  30. Install the A/C compressor top bolts.
  31. Install the power steering pump. Refer to Power Steering Pump Replacement in Power Steering System.
  32. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  33. Install the engine mount bracket support and the bolts. Refer to Engine Mount Bracket Replacement .
  34. Tighten

        • Tighten the 8 mm bolts to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).
        •  Tighten the 12 mm bolts to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).

  35. Install the engine mount assembly. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement .
  36. Remove the engine support fixture. Refer to Engine Support Fixture .
  37. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
  38. Fill the oil.
  39. Connect the negative battery cable.
