INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER SQUEAKS OR ITCH NOISE

SUBJECT: INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER SQUEAK OR ITCH NOISE (REPOSITION FELT PADS)

MODELS: 1996-97 PONTIAC GRAND AM - BUILT THROUGH VIN BREAKPOINT VC000700

CONDITION:

SOME OWNERS MAY COMMENT ON A SQUEAK OR ITCH NOISE FROM THE INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER AREA.

CAUSE:

THE GRAY FOAM INSULATOR BLOCK ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL INNER PAD RUBS THE BACK OF THE CLUSTER POCKET OR THE FELT PADS ON THE TRIM PLATE ARE MISPOSITIONED.

CORRECTION:

1. REMOVE STEERING COLUMN UPPER COVER.

2. REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER TRIM PLATE (4 SCREWS, 6 SCREWS IF VEHICLE HAS TAPE PLAYER).

3. REMOVE INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER (DO NOT DISCONNECT ANY WIRING OR REPLACE CLUSTER).

4. REMOVE GRAY FOAM INSULATOR BLOCK ON INSTRUMENT PANEL INNER PAD, WHICH IS DIRECTLY BEHIND CLUSTER.

5. ALIGN FELT PADS ON INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER TRIM PLATE, AT THE 10 - 2 O'CLOCK POSITION.
