REAR WHEEL BRAKE DRAG (DIAGNOSE/REPLACE PARKING)

SUBJECT: REAR WHEEL BRAKE DRAG (DIAGNOSE/REPLACE PARKING BRAKE CABLES)

MODELS: 1995 BUICK SKYLARK 1995 OLDSMOBILE ACHIEVA 1995 PONTIAC GRAND AM

VIN BREAKPOINTS:

BUICK: PRIOR TO VIN SC411323 OLDSMOBILE: PRIOR TO VIN SM313630 PONTIAC: PRIOR TO VIN SC734169 (C PLANT) PRIOR TO VIN SM529184 (M PLANT)

CONDITION:

SOME OWNERS MAY COMMENT ON A REAR WHEEL BRAKE DRAG THAT IS MORE THAN DESIRABLE. HOWEVER, IT IS ACCEPTABLE TO HAVE ONE HIGH SPOT THAT DOES NOT REDUCE THE WHEEL FROM ROTATING FREELY.

CAUSE:

SOME PARKING BRAKE CABLE RETURN SPRINGS MAY LACK ENOUGH TENSION TO COMPLETELY RETURN THE PARK BRAKE LEVER WITHIN THE BRAKE ASSEMBLY.

CORRECTION:

FOLLOW THE PROCEDURE BELOW TO DETERMINE IF REPLACING THE PARKING BRAKE CABLE IS NECESSARY.

1. WITH ENGINE RUNNING, DEPRESS AND HOLD THE SERVICE BRAKE ON WITH MODERATE TO HEAVY APPLY FORCE.

2. WHILE SERVICE BRAKE IS APPLIED, CYCLE PARK BRAKE LEVER FOUR (4) TIMES. APPLY LEVER TO A MINIMUM OF 3/4 OF TRAVEL, (10) CLICKS MINIMUM.

3. RELEASE PARK BRAKE THEN RELEASE THE SERVICE BRAKE.

4. TURN ENGINE OFF.

5. WITH BOTH REAR WHEELS OFF THE GROUND, HAND TURN REAR WHEELS IN THE FORWARD DIRECTION AND OBSERVE THE AMOUNT OF WHEEL SPIN.

6. IF WHEEL SPINS FREELY (MAY HAVE ONE HIGH SPOT WHICH DOES NOT REDUCE THE WHEEL FROM ROTATING) - PARK BRAKE SYSTEM OK, NO FURTHER ACTION REQUIRED.

7. IF WHEEL DOES NOT SPIN FREELY, REPLACE BOTH PARKING BRAKE CABLES WITH P/N 22646659 (2 REQUIRED).

8. IF REAR SHOE TO DRUM CLEARANCE IS QUESTIONED, REFER TO SECTION 5C OF THE SERVICE MANUAL.
