Subject:Key Cannot Be Removed From the Ignition Lock Switch

Models:2004-2005 Pontiac GTO

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in the PI.

Condition/Concern:

Key cannot be removed from the ignition lock switch on GTOs equipped with an automatic transmission.

Recommendation/Instructions:

This can be caused by the shifter being out of adjustment. Verify that the shifter goes all the way into the park position. If it does not, it will be necessary to adjust the shifter linkage.

To adjust shifter linkage:

  1. Raise the vehicle.
  2. Loosen the locking bolt at the lower end of the gear shifter selector lever.
  3. Position the trans selector lever (paw) to the park position.
  4. Position the gear shifter lever to the park position.
  5. Torque the locking bolt at the select lever to 25 Nm.
  6. Lower the vehicle and test gear shifter operation.
  7. Ensure the vehicle only starts in park and neutral. If required adjust the neutral safety switch.

Please follow this diagnosis process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
