Makes 🢒 Pontiac 🢒 2004 🢒 GTO 🢒 Restraints 🢒 SIR 🢒 SIR Disabling and Enabling

Disabling Procedure
  1. Turn the steering wheel so that the vehicle's wheels are pointing straight ahead.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.

    Important: With the SIR fuse removed and the ignition switch in the ON position, the AIR BAG warning indicator illuminates. This is normal operation, and does not indicate an SIR system malfunction.

  3. Locate and remove the SIR fuse from the instrument panel (I/P) fuse panel (1), which is located near the base of the steering column.
  4. Disconnect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  5. Remove the upper steering column trim cover. Refer to Steering Column Trim Covers Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column.

  6. Release the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil connector locking mechanism (3).
  7. Disconnect the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil connector (1).
  8. Remove the I/P compartment. Refer to Instrument Panel Compartment Door Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gages and Console.

  9. Release then unlock the I/P module connector (2).
  10. Disconnect the I/P module connector (2).

Enabling Procedure
  1. Remove the key from the ignition switch.

  2. Install the connector (2) to the inflatable restraint I/P module (1).
  3. Connect the connector and lock the connector with the connector lock mechanism.
  4. Install the I/P compartment. Refer to Instrument Panel Compartment Door Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gages and Console.

  5. Install the connector (1) for the inflatable restraint steering wheel module coil (2).
  6. Lock the connector (1) with the connector lock mechanism (3).
  7. Install the upper steering column trim cover. Refer to Steering Column Trim Covers Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column.
  8. Connect the battery negative cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.

  9. Install the SIR fuse into the I/P fuse panel (1).
  10. Use caution while reaching in and turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
  11. The AIR BAG indicator will flash then turn OFF.
  12. Perform the SIR Diagnostic System Check if the AIR BAG warning indicator does not operate as described. Refer to Diagnostic System Check - SIR .
