Subject: | Whine Noise in 6th Gear Only at Highway Speeds |
Models: | 2008-2009 Pontiac G8 |
Equipped With a 6L80 Automatic Transmission RPO MYC |
The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
Some customers may comment of a whine noise in 6th gear at approximately 65-80 mph (104-128 kph). This noise will not be present in lower gears or at speeds above or below this range.
This noise may be mistaken as a rear axle noise. To confirm that this is a transmission noise make use of chassis ears. Attach one sensor to the rear of the transmission and the other to the rear axle. Drive the car to verify which component is making the noise. If the noise is coming from the transmission clean the surface of the top bracket of the transmission mount. Apply 4.25 - 5.0 oz (120-140 grams) of stick-on wheel weight to the top, left side of the upper mount as shown in the illustration below. Drive the car to evaluate the noise reduction. Based on field testing it may be necessary to add an equal amount of weight to the right side of the mount. Do not add the additional weight unless an evaluation drive indicates the need for it.
Important Note: Do not replace the transmission for this noise. Replacement may temporarily reduce or eliminate the noise but the noise will return with additional driving.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
