Do This

Don't Do This

Adjust the floor mat retainer(s).

DO NOT replace the floor carpet or mats.

Condition

Some customers may comment that the front floor mat exhibits a bulge or wave.

Cause

This condition may be caused by the variation in the spacing between the front floor carpet retainer stud post and the position of the retainer on the factory and/or accessory floor mat.

Object Number: 2143725 Size: SH

If this condition is present, the front floor mat retainers may align to the floor carpet retainer stud posts causing the mat to lift up in the center, creating the bulge as shown above.

Correction

Important: It is not necessary to adjust both front floor mats. ONLY adjust the floor mat retainers if a bulge or wave is present.

Adjust the front floor mat retainer(s) using the following procedure:

  1. Remove the bulging floor mat.
  2. Gently pry apart the retainers from the front floor mat.

  3. Object Number: 2143726 Size: SH
2.1. Insert a pair of snap ring pliers under the upper retainer flange and rotate.

    Object Number: 2143727 Size: SH
2.2. Open the pliers to unclip the upper retainer (1) from the lower retainer (2).
2.3. Repeat Steps 2.1 and 2.2 for the opposite side floor mat retainer.

    Object Number: 2143729 Size: SH
  4. Measure and mark the existing holes in the floor mat to 30 mm (1-3/16 in) inward toward the center of the mat.

  5. Object Number: 2142434 Size: SF

Important: Be sure to enlarge the exiting cutouts (1) toward the center of the floor mat.

  6. Elongate the two existing cutouts (1) in the floor mat toward the center of the mat (3-4 mm (0.12-0.16 in)). This will allow the floor mat retainers to move inward relative to the floor mat.

  7. Object Number: 2143730 Size: SH

Important: Only coat the lower retainers with the adhesive.

  8. Apply a coat of GM Weatherstrip Adhesive Gel (Black), P/N 12345097 (in Canada, use P/N 10953479) or equivalent, to the inside flange of the two lower retainer pieces. This will secure the retainers to the backside of the mat and prevent movement of the retainers.
  9. Reassemble the retainers to the mat by pressing the two halves of the retainers together. The retainers should be positioned inward toward the center of the mat.
  10. Clean off any excessive adhesive from the floor mat and retainers.
  11. Install the front floor mat positioning the retainers over the floor carpet retainer stud posts. Verify that the retainers are positioned correctly and the center of the floor mat is pushed down.
  12. Important: Allow the adhesive to dry for 24 hours before installing the mat(s). The floor mat(s) should be placed in the trunk of the vehicle. The customer may reinstall the floor mat(s) the following day.

  13. Remove the floor mat and allow the adhesive to cure for 24 hours prior to installing the floor mat. The adhesive will secure the retainer to the backside of the mat and prevent movement of the retainers.
  14. If required, repeat this entire procedure for the opposite side front floor mat.
