The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

Problems with successfully programming the TDM module using replacement new ignition keys.

Recommendation/Instructions:

ONLY use this procedure if replacing the theft deterrent module (TDM) using NEW VEHICLE KEYS.

  1. Use Document ID# 1237824 to install a new theft deterrent module into the vehicle.
  2. To Learn the new key - Turn the ignition ON, with the engine OFF.
  3. Turn the ignition off and remove the key. Then within 10 seconds insert the next key to be learned.
  4. To Learn the second new key, Turn the ignition ON with the engine OFF. The vehicle has now learned two new keys.
  5. To program additional keys (not to exceed a total of 12 keys) Repeat step 4.
  6. With a scan tool, select TDM in the Vehicle Control Systems Module Replacement/Setup data list.
  7. Select, Step 1
  8. Select, Use New Keys.
  9. Select, Step 2
  10. Select, U.S. or Canada After this, the scanner will continue with setup and you should see a message stating, "Theft Module Setup is complete".
  11. Cycle the ignition switch from ON to OFF.
  12. Note: Now that theft module setup is completed, you now have to learn the NEW Theft module SEED to the PCM. To do this, follow the procedure below.

  13. Turn key ON With Tech2, request info from vehicle via SPS. Then on TIS-2-Web select " Vehicle Theft Deterrent Learn for Powertrain System "
  14. Then take scanner back to the vehicle and through SPS, program the ECU. This procedure will take 10 minutes to complete.
  15. After counter counts down to zero, cycle the key off, remove Tech2 from DLC connector, and start engine.

Important:

   •  When replacing a TDM with a GM SPO Replacement Part, the TDM will learn the keys immediately. However, the existing powertrain control module (PCM) must learn the fuel continue password of the replacement TDM.
   • When replacing a PCM with a GM SPO Replacement Part, the new PCM will learn the incoming fuel continue password of the TDM immediately upon the next ignition switch change from OFF to CRANK.

A PCM, which has been installed in another vehicle, will have learned the VIN and fuel continue password of the other vehicle's TDM. Perform either the 10-minute relearn procedure or the 30-minute relearn procedure to learn the fuel continue password of the current vehicle's TDM.

The procedure is:

Request info from the vehicle via SPS. Then on TIS-2-Web, follow screens to the TDM and select " Vehicle Theft Deterrent Learn for Powertrain System ".

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
