Condition

Some customers may comment that the rear fascia bows out where the fascia meets the taillamp and rear quarter panel.

Correction

Important:

   • DO NOT REPLACE THE REAR FASCIA.
   • The rear tail lamp housing area does not allow sufficient access to the fascia outer support. Do not attempt this repair through the rear tail lamp housing area.

To correct this condition, use the following procedure to apply urethane adhesive to better secure the rear fascia to the fascia outer support bracket (hockey stick) at the rear quarter panel.

Procedure

  1. Hoist the vehicle.
  2. Remove the rear wheels.
  3. Remove the pushpin retainers/fasteners that secure the rear wheelhouse liner to the rear fascia (both sides of vehicle).
  4. Pull back the rear side of the wheelhouse panel in order to gain access to the bolt that attaches the rear fascia to the quarter panel. Remove the bolt from both sides of the vehicle.
  5. Open the decklid and remove both fasteners that attach the rear fascia.
  6. Pull the sides of the rear fascia outward to release the retainers from the rear fascia outer support.
  7. Disconnect the connector for the light at the license plate area.
  8. Remove the rear fascia to access the fascia outer support.
  9. On both sides of the vehicle, remove the rear/top fastener from the outer fascia support.
  10. Clean all surfaces (fascia outer support, rear quarter and rear fascia).
  11. Important:

       •  Do not apply an excessive amount of adhesive. This can cause excessive damage to the fascia, fascia outer support bracket and/or rear quarter panel if future repairs are necessary.
       •  Refer to the Urethane Adhesive section of this bulletin for products that meet GM specifications.

  12. Apply a 25-50 mm (1-2 in) bead of urethane (on both sides of vehicle) between the fascia outer support and the rear quarter.
  13. Install and tighten the fasteners to secure the fascia outer support.
  14. Tighten:
Tighten the fasteners to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  15. Engage the fascia key slot retainers to the rear fascia outer support. Press firmly to seat the fascia.
  16. Install the fasteners to attach the rear fascia.
  17. Tighten:
Tighten the fasteners to 4.5 N·m (40 lb in).

  18. Install bolts (on both sides of vehicle) to attach the bumper to the quarter panel.
  19. Install pushpin retainers to secure the wheelhouse liner.
  20. Apply masking tape to hold the rear fascia to the quarter panel, until the urethane has cured (approximately 2 hours).
  21. Reinstall the rear wheels.
