GM Service Manual Online
For 1990-2009 cars only

Use one of the two following methods in order to erase the DTCs in the EBCM memory:

    • The Scan Tool method
    • The ignition cycle default method

A drive cycle occurs when the ignition is turned to RUN and the vehicle is driven faster than 16 km/h (10 mph).

Verify the proper system operation and the absence of DTCs after completing the clearing procedure.

The EBCM will not permit DTC clearing until all of the DTCs have been displayed.

The following methods will not clear the DTCs:

    • Unplugging the EBCM
    • Disconnecting the battery cables
    • Turning off the ignition switch (except on an ignition cycle default)

Scan Tool Method

Use the following procedure in order to clear the DTCs with the Scan Tool:

  1. Select DTCs for Diagnostic Trouble Codes.
  2. View the DTCs.
  3. The Scan Tool will display the following message: History Data Will Be Lost. Clear DTCs?
  4. Answer YES.

This action will clear the DTCs.

Ignition Cycle Default

Existing DTCs automatically clear from the EBCM memory if no diagnostic trouble codes occur for 100 drive cycles.

A drive cycle occurs when the ignition is turned to RUN and the vehicle is driven faster than 16 km/h (10 mph).

A drive cycle also occurs if a DTC sets when the ignition key is turned to ON, regardless of vehicle speed.
