Removal Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 38197-A Crankshaft Balancer Puller
    • J 37096 Flywheel Holding Tool
  1. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  2. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  3. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  4. If equipped with the M49 manual transmission remove the following components:

  6. Remove the transmission brace bolts (2, 3).
  7. Remove the transmission brace (1).

  8. Object Number: 349560  Size: SH
  9. Remove the flywheel housing inspection cover bolts (2).
  10. Remove the flywheel housing inspection cover (3).
  11. If equipped with the 4L60-E automatic transmission remove the torque converter cover. Refer to Torque Converter Cover Replacement in Automatic Transmission - 4L60-E.

  12. Object Number: 309963  Size: SH
  13. Use J 37096 in order to hold the flywheel.

  15. Remove the crankshaft balancer bolt (1) from the balancer (2).
  16. Remove the key (3) from the crankshaft.

  17. Object Number: 313955  Size: SH
  18. Remove the crankshaft balancer using the J 38197-A .
  19. 13.1. Invert J 38197-2 so the leg of the tool is facing away from the crankshaft balancer.
    13.2. Install the silver bolts J 38197-4 to the crankshaft balancer.
    13.3. Remove J 38197-1, J 38197-2, and J 38197-4 from the crankshaft balancer.

Installation Procedure

Tools Required

J 36660-A Torque Angle Meter


    Object Number: 440746  Size: SH
  1. Lubricate the seal surface of the crankshaft balancer with engine oil.
  2. Install the crankshaft balancer (2).
  3. Align the key slot in the balancer (2) to the key slot in the crankshaft.
  4. Install the key (3)
  5. Install the crankshaft balancer bolt (1).
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the crankshaft balancer bolt (1) to 150 N·m (111 lb ft). Use the J 36660-A to torque the crankshaft balancer bolt (1) an additional 114 degrees.

  7. Remove the J 37096 .
  8. If equipped with the 4L60-E automatic transmission install the torque converter cover. Refer to Torque Converter Cover Replacement in Automatic Transmission - 4L60-E.
  9. If equipped with the M49 manual transmission install the following components:

  11. Install the flywheel housing inspection cover (3).
  12. Install the flywheel housing inspection cover bolts (2).
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the flywheel housing inspection cover bolts (2) to 48 N·m (35 lb ft).

  14. Install the transmission brace (1).
  15. Install the transmission brace bolts (2, 3).
  16. Tighten

        • Tighten the brace bolts (3) to the engine block to 28 N·m (21 lb ft).
        • Tighten the brace bolts (2) to the transmission to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).
  17. Install the starter motor. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  18. Lower the vehicle.
  19. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  20. Perform the crankshaft position (CKP) system variation learn procedure. Refer to Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn in Engine Controls - 3.8 L.
