PRODUCT CAMPAIGN: 'B' SERIES DIE.ENG.WATER IN FUEL DETECTOR

GENERAL MOTORS HAS DETERMINED THAT ON SOME 1981 DIESEL ENGINE EQUIPPED VEHICLES, THE WATER-IN-FUEL LIFHT MAY INADVERTENTLY COME ON, FALSELY INDICATING WATER IN THE FUEL TANK. THIS CONDITION CAN OCCUR AS A RESULT OF HIGH VOLTAGE OUTPUT ALONG WITH SUDDEN CHANGES IN SYSTEM VOLTAGE OR ELECTRICAL LOADS.

TO PREVENT THE POSSIBILITY OF THIS CONDITION OCCURRING, IT WILL BE NECESSARY TO INSTALL A FILTER CAPACITOR ACROSS THE WATER-IN-FUEL DETECTION LIGHT CIRCUIT AT THE FUSE PANEL.

CARS BUILT AFTER THE FOLLOWING VIN BREAKPOINTS HAVE BEEN CORRECTED BY INSTALLATION OF A CAPACITOR AT THE FUSE PANEL OR INTERNAL CHANGES IN THE TANK UNIT WATER DECTOR ASSEMBLY.

VEHICLES INVOLVED

ALL 1981 PONTIAC CATALINA, BONNEVILLE, AND BONNEVILLE BROUGHAM MODELS (SAFARI WAGONS INCLUDED) EQUIPPED WITH A 5.7 LITER DIESEL ENGINE WITHIN THE FOLLOWING VEHICLE BREAKPOINTS.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
