Subject: | Service VME -- Repeat Sliding Rear Cargo Tray Damage |
Models: | . |
When servicing the vehicle with the VIN you entered, the following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the described symptoms.
This is a message to the Pontiac VME dealers and the topic is the Aztek sliding rear cargo convenience tray damage issue. A recent review of several warranty claims as well as the return failed parts relative to that sliding rear convenience cargo tray that was used on the 2001 and 2002 Pontiac Aztek shows a need for some further clarification on the proper operation. The most common failure that was noted involves the floor track assembly and specifically breakage of the lugs that are used to limit the travel of the sliding tray. These lugs stop as well as stabilize the convenience cargo tray when it’s fully extended to the rearward position. A closer inspection shows that the operator attempted to remove the carrier from the vehicle while the carrier was fully extended rearward and was engaged in these lugs. This was pretty apparent from the witness marks caused by the wheel against the run track as well as the lugs being broken off. And this can really only happen from the operator attempting removal while the lugs are engaged. The proper removal procedure is outlined in the owner’s manual and it basically instructs the operator to release the tray and move it about six inches rearward and then lift it using the handle while supporting the underside of the tray to accomplish the removal without the damage to the track assembly. So when you encounter one of these broken tracks you may want to take a look for those conditions, and it may be an opportunity to instruct the operator on the proper removal procedures.
Please follow this diagnosis process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed. If these steps do not resolve the condition, please contact GM TAC for further diagnostic assistance. This diagnostic approach was developed for the vehicle with the VIN you entered and should not be automatically be used for other vehicles with similar symptoms.
