Underhood Insulation Flaps at Highway Speed (Replace Hood Pad)

Subject:Underhood Insulation Flaps at Highway Speed (Replace Hood Pad)

Models:2001 Pontiac Aztek

Condition

Some customers may comment that the underhood insulation pad may flap at highway speeds. This movement of the hood pad may be audible in the passenger compartment.

Cause

The area of the front end near the styled "intake" slots permits sufficient air flow to the underhood area causing the forward edge of the hood pad material to weaken and flap.

Correction

Replace the hood pad with a revised hood pad, P/N 10308029, that is shorter with the forward edge tucked into a recess in the hood.

  1. Open the hood and install fender covers.
  2. Remove the hood insulator pad push-in retainers, using J-38778, Door Trim Pad & Granish Clip Remover.
  3. Remove the two metal edge clips securing the front edge of the insulation pad to the hood. Discard the clips.
  4. Remove the hood insulator pad from the hood.
  5. Install the revised hood insulator to the hood support brackets.
  6. Important: When installing the new pad, you may have to bend the retaining tabs slightly to obtain clearance to install the insulator. Do not bend the tabs any more than is required to install the insulator. Confirm that the tabs are bent back to the original position once the insulator is installed.

  7. Align the hood insulator retainer holes with the holes in the hood.
  8. Install the push-in retainers to the hood.
  9. Remove the fender covers and close the hood.
