A change of the 3rd clutch plate fiber (640) material requires that all 1989 transaxles models built after Julian Date (076) March 17, 1989, have new calibrations and new two letter (alpha) model codes. A new overhaul package and 3rd clutch plate assembly package will service the new 1989 models.
When replacing the 3rd clutch fiber plates (640) on 1989 models for any reason, check the two letter model code on the tag as shown in Figure 1.
When servicing a Hydra-Matic 4T60 transaxle you may notice: thenew 3rd clutch plates may have the following markings as shown in figure 4. The new 3rd clutch plates may have four black stripes about an 1/8" wide and the notch may not be in one of the teeth. Some early build models after Julian Date (076) will have some of the markings or none at all.
1. Harsh shifts or potentially a tie-up condition (worse in altitudes) on 2-3 and 3-2 shifts if the old 3rd clutch plates are installed into a transaxle built after the Julian Date (076) (with new model codes).
2. A slip-bump condition on 2-3 and 3-2 shifts if the new 3rd clutch plates are installed into a transaxle built before Julian Date (076) (old model codes).

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
