INSTRUMENT PANEL SQUEAK OR ITCHING TYPE NOISE

1985-86 6000 AND 6000 STE

A squeak or itching type noise may be noticed particularly during cold weather, in the instrument panel area on subject models. This noise may be caused by the cluster trim plate contacting the cluster lens or instrument panel carrier. This condition can be corrected by using the following procedure:

1. Remove cluster trim plate.

2. Examine back of cluster trim plate or lens for the area(s) that are contacting the cluster lens I.P. carrier (these contact areas will be shiny in appearance).

3. Apply a 1/4" wide by 1" long strip of double sided tape (such as 3M Scotch Mount Automotive Attachment Tape or equivalent) to cluster trim plate contact area (s).

4. Reinstall cluster trim plate.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
