1988-89 Trofeo Models 1989 Toronado Models
Some of the above mentioned vehicle may experience distortion and warping of the passenger side ash tray cover in the door armrest. This condition may be caused by natural interior heat load and results from the use of a material with low heat resistance for the ash tray covers. The affected covers are black, molded plastic with an applique. Chrome plated covers are not affected.
To repair this condition replace only the ashtray cover using the following part and procedure:
Ashtray Lid: P/N 20726767
Tools Required: Torx-head (T15) screwdriver Small pair side cutters Needle-nose pliers
Parts are currently available from GMSPO.
1. Using a Torx-head screwdriver (T15), remove the switch plate retention screw located at the front of the plate under the ashtray cover.
2. Lift up on the front of the switch plate and pull forward slightly to disengage from the armrest.
3. Disconnect switches.
4. Turn switch plate over. Remove spring from ashtray cover. Remove ash receptacle if necessary.
5. Using a small pair of side cutters, cut off the cover stop (the finger which holds the spring) to allow cover removal. Disengage the cover from the switch plate by flexing the cover in the center, rear. Refer to Figure 1, a and b. DO NOT DISCARD COVER UNTIL AFTER NEXT STEP.
6. Position new cover on switch plate. Remove spring pin from old cover with pliers. Press through hole in switch plate into the new cover. Refer to Figure 2, a and b.
7. Reassemble the spring to switch plate and cover.
8. Reassemble the switch plate to the armrest. Replace ash receptacle.
