Defogger Inoperative

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position.
  2. Press and release the rear defogger switch.
  3. Test to see if the defogger ON indicator comes on.

Does the defogger ON indicator come on?

  1. Remove the rear window defogger relay.
  2. Using a test lamp, probe the rear window defogger relay harness connector between terminals C7 and B5.

Does the test lamp light?

--

Go to Step 3

Using a test lamp, backprobe the rear window defogger relay harness connector between terminals B7 and ground.

Does the test lamp light?

--

Go to Step 4

  1. If the rear defogger ON indicator turns off before the test is made, press and release the rear defogger switch again.
  2. Using a test lamp, backprobe the rear window defogger relay harness connector between terminals B7 and C5.

Does the test lamp light?

Repair a poor connection or an open in CKT 193.

Repair a poor connection or an open in CKT 241 between the rear window defogger relay harness connector terminal B7 and S264.

Using a test lamp, probe the rear window defogger relay harness connector between terminal C7 and ground.

Does the test lamp light?

--

Go to Step 9

  1. Reinstall the rear window defogger relay.
  2. If the rear defogger ON indicator turns off before the test is made, press and release the rear defogger switch again.
  3. Using a test lamp, probe between the rear defogger grid harness connectors C1 terminal A and C2 terminal A.

Does the test lamp light?

Repair the rear defogger grid. Refer to Grid Line Repair .

  1. If the rear defogger ON indicator turns off before the test is made, press and release the rear defogger switch again.
  2. Using a test lamp, probe between the rear defogger grid harness connector C2 and ground.

Does the test lamp light?

Repair a poor connection or an open in CKT 450 between the rear defogger grid connector C1 and G401.

Is the repair complete?

Repair a poor connection or an open in CKT 293 between the rear window defogger relay connector terminal B5 and the rear defogger grid connector C2.

Repair a poor connection or an open in CKT 1040 between the fuse block terminal H6 and the rear window defogger relay harness connector terminal C7.

Test to see if the HVAC/DRL Fuse in the fuse block is open.

Is the HVAC/DRL Fuse in the fuse block open?

  1. Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position.
  2. Using a test lamp, backprobe the heater-A/C control beteween connector C2 terminals C and K.

Does the test lamp light?

  2. Using a test lamp, backprobe between the heater-A/C control harness connector C2 terminal D and ground.

Does the test lamp light?

Repair a short to B+ in CKT 193.

Repair a poor connection or an open in CKT 241 between the fuse block terminal E2 and the heater-A/C control harness connector C2 terminal C.

  1. Replace the rear window defogger relay with a known good relay. Refer to Rear Window Defogger Relay Replacement .
  2. Operate the rear defogger.

Does the rear defogger work properly?
