MECHANICAL COMPONENTS THAT ATTACH TO SMC (SHEET MOLDED COMPOUND) TYPE DOOR INNER PANELS WITH RIVETS MAY BECOME LOOSE OVER A PERIOD OF TIME DUE TO MOTION OF THE COMPONENT DURING OPERATION (SUCH AS WINDOW REGULATORS, POWER LOCK ACTUATORS, ETC). THIS LOOSENESS MAY CREATE SLOTS AT THE ATTACHING HOLE LOCATIONS.
THE FOLLOWING REPAIR PROCEDURE SHOULD BE MADE IF INNER PANEL ATTACHMENTS ARE A CONCERN (ASSUMES THE DOOR TRIM PANEL AND WATER DEFLECTOR HAVE BEEN REMOVED).
1. MARK THE ORIGINAL LOCATION OF THE ATTACHING HOLE ON THE INNER PANEL WITH AN APPROPRIATE MARKING TOOL (SCRIBE, INK, MAGIC MARKER, ETC.).
2. REMOVE THE COMPONENT (WINDOW REGULATOR, ETC.) FROM THE DOOR INNER PANEL FOLLOWING THE INSTRUCTIONS PROVIDED IN THE APPROPRIATE SERVICE MANUAL.
3. CLEAN BOTH SURFACES OF THE INNER PANEL AT THE COMPONENT MOUNTING LOCATIONS.
4. APPLY DUCT TAPE, FOIL BACKED TAPE OR OTHER SUITABLE MATERIAL TO THE BACK SURFACE (INSIDE THE DOOR ASSEMBLY) TO CREATE A FLAT SURFACE IN THE AREA OF REPAIR.
5. USING A FLAT BLADED TOOL, FILL THE DAMAGED AREA WITH A STRUCTURAL TYPE REPAIR MATERIAL SUCH AS STRUCTURAL BONDING ADHESIVE, P/N 12345726, LORD FUSOR SMC BODY PANEL REPAIR ADHESIVE, DOMINION/ AMERICAN SURE SEAL #XRGM, COMPOXY REPAIR MATERIAL, P/N 12345744, OR EQUIVALENT. FOLLOW MANUFACTURER'S DIRECTIONS FOR APPLICATION AND CURING TIMES.
6. AFTER PROPER CURE HAS BEEN ATTAINED, REMOVE THE BACKING TAPE FROM THE INSIDE SURFACE OF THE DOOR ASSEMBLY.
7. DRILL THE APPROPRIATE SIZE HOLE AT THE PREVIOUSLY MARKED ATTACHING LOCATIONS.
8. REINSTALL THE COMPONENT USING THE CORRECT FASTENERS AS INDICATED IN THE SERVICE/PARTS MANUAL.
9. REINSTALL THE DOOR INNER PANEL WATER DEFLECTOR AND TRIM PANEL.
