REAR BRAKES FREEZE-UP INSTALL NEW BRAKE SHOES

SUBJECT: REAR BRAKE FREEZE-UP (INSTALL NEW BRAKE SHOES)

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1992-93 "U" VAN

CONDITION:

The ABS light may come on and one or both of the rear wheels will not turn after being parked during cold weather.

CAUSE:

When the rear brake shoes are damp and the temperature is 0 degrees C (32 degrees F) or lower, the rear brake shoes may temporarily freeze to the brake drums. This condition may be the result of moisture intrusion from a car wash, freezing rain, or heavy slush, and then parking the vehicle before the brakes have dried out.

CORRECTION:

Replace the rear brake shoes with the P/N listed below. The new shoes have a lower metallic content and will more easily free up from the brake drum.

92 Vehicles Only:

Seal the hole where the park brake cable goes through the backing plate with GM RTV sealant P/N 12345739 or equivalent. (1993 vehicles have a grommet around the cable.)

NOTE: These pads should only be used for customers who periodically experience this rear brake freeze-up. DO NOT USE AS A GENERAL REPLACEMENT PART.

Clear any stored ABS codes using a TECH 1. Codes set with the condition are 23, 24 and/or 31.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
