CAMPAIGN: UPPER I/P GLOVE BOXOPENING EFFORT

Subject: UPPER INSTRUMENT PANEL GLOVE COMPARTMENT DOOR (GLOVE BOX DOOR) OPENING EFFORT

Models/Years: 1990 AND 1991 SILHOUETTE

CONDITION

General Motors has determined that certain 1990 and 1991 Oldsmobile Silhouette van model vehicles fall to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (MVSS) 201, "Occupant Protection In Interior Impacts". Some of these vehicles were assembled with upper instrument panel (I/P) glove compartment doors which will not remain closed during certain load forces which can be experienced during a vehicle crash.

To correct this condition, dealers are to replace the current upper glove compartment door with a redesigned upper glove compartment door which incorporates a positive latch to keep the door closed should a vehicle crash occur.

VEHICLES INVOLVED

Involved are certain 1990 and 1991 Oldsmobile Silhouette van model vehicles built within the following VIN breakpoints: Through & Year Model Model Name Beginning Including ---- ----- ---------- --------- --------- 1990 U Silhouette LT300001 LT328109 (S.O.P.) (E.O.P.)

1991 U Silhouette MT300001 LT317793 (S.O.P.) (E.O.P.)

S.O.P. means Start-of-Production and E.O.P. means End-of-Production.

NOTE: The VIN list to dealers with involved vehicles will include codes for interior trim colors to aid in ordering compartment doors.

DEALER ACTION

Dealers are to perform this campaign on all vehicles involved at no charge to owners, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership, from this time forward.

Whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign is taken into your new or used vehicle inventory, or if it is in your dealership for service, dealers are to ensure the campaign correction has been made before selling or releasing the vehicle.

Dealers are to contact owners of vehicles recently sold from your new or used vehicle inventory and arrange for the campaign correction to be performed.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

PLEASE REFER TO THE ILLUSTRATION ON PAGE 3.

1. Open the upper instrument panel (I/P) glove compartment door, remove two (2) screws from hinge to door and remove door. Some doors may have shims at the hinge. Remove the shims and do not reinstall.

3. Remove the retainer from the left side of the glove compartment and install the new retainer using the same screw.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
