CAMPAIGN: POWER STEERING HOSE ROUTING

CONDITION

GENERAL MOTORS HAS DETERMINED THAT A DEFECT WHICH RELATES TO MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY EXISTS IN SOME 1981 OLDSMOBILE OMEGA MODELS EQUIPPED WITH A V6 ENGINE AND POWER STEERING. THE INVOLVED VEHICLES MAY HAVE BEEN ASSEMBLED WITH THE POWER STEERING HOSE(S) INCORRECTLY ROUTED. IF THIS CONDITION IS NOT CORRECTED THE POWER STEERING HOSE MAY CONTACT THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD, RESULTING IN POSSIBLE DETERIORATION OF THE HOSE. HOSE FAILURE WOULD RESULT IN POWER STEERING FLUID LEAKAGE ONTO THE EXHAUST MANIFOLD. UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS SMOKE AND/OR AN UNDERHOOD FIRE COULD THEN RESULT. SUCH A FIRE COULD, IN TIME, SPREAD TO THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT AND CAUSE BURN INJURIES TO OCCUPANTS REMAINING IN THE VEHICLE.

CARS AFFECTED

CERTAIN 1981 OLDSMOBILE OMEGA MODELS EQUIPPED WITH V6 ENGINE AND POWER STEERING BUILT AT WILLOW RUN (W) ASSEMBLY PLANT FROM THE START OF PRODUCTION UP TO AND INCLUDING THE FOLLOWING VIN:

DEALER ACTION

DEALERS ARE TO INSPECT AND REPLACE THE POWER STEERING HOSE(S) AS REQUIRED.

ON CARS EQUIPPED WITH AIR CONDITIOING THE POWER STEERING PRESSURE HOSE IS TO BE REPLACED AND THE RETURN HOSE IS TO BE INSPECTED FOR PROPER CLEARANCE AND REPLACED IF NECESSARY. (REFER TO THE SERVICE PROCEDURE FOR AIR OCNDITIONED CARS.)

ON NON AIR CONDITIONED CARS THE PRESSURE AND RETURN HOSES ARE TO BE INSPECTED FOR PROPER CLEARANCE AND REPLACED IF NECESSARY. (REFER TO THE SERVICE PROCEDURE FOR NON AIR CONDITIONED CARS.)

ALL CARS ARE TO HAVE A SPACER CLIP INSTALLED BETWEEN THE PRESSURE AND RETURN PIPE ASSEMBLIES.

DEALERS ARE TO PERFORM THIS RECALL CAMPAIGN AT NO CHARGE TO THE OWNER ON AFFECTED VEHICLES, REGARDLESS OF TIME, MILEAGE OR OWNERSHIP, AND ARE TO CORRECT ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES IN DEALER NEW AND USED CAR INVENTORY PRIOR TO THEIR SALE.

WHENEVER A VEHICLE SUBJECT TO THIS CAMPAIGN IS TAKEN INTO YOUR NEW OR USED CAR INVENTORY IN THE FUTURE, YOU SHOULD TAKE THE STEPS NECESSARY TO BE SURE THE CAMPAIGN CORRECTION HAS BEEN MADE BEFORE RESELLING THE VEHICLE.

DEALERS ARE TO PERFORM THE CAMPAIGN SERVICES ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES AS THEY ARE BROUGHT IN FOR ANY KIND OF SERVICE UNTIL ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES HAVE BEEN CORRECTED.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

SELECT APPLICABLE SERVICE PROCEDURE BASED ON WHETHER THE VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH OR WITHOUT AIR CONDITIONING (C60).

AIR CONDITIONED CARS

1. RAISE HOOD. IF HOSES ARE SECURED TO THE A/C ACCUMULATOR REFRIGERANT TUBE WITH A PLASTIC BAND, CUT AND DISCARD THE BAND.

2. INSPECT POWER STEERING RETURN HOSE ROUTING TO DETERMINE IF CLEARANCE BET- WEEN THE RETURN HOSE AND EXHAUST MANIFOLD IS AT LEAST 40 MM (1 9/16") FIG. 1.

3. DISCONNECT BOTH THE STEERING GEAR RETURN PIPE AND PRESSURE HOSE AT THE POWER STEERING RACK AND PINION GEAR. FIG.2.

4. DISCONNECT THE PRESSURE HOSE AT THE PRESSURE SENSING SWITCH AND REMOVE.

5. INSTALL NEW PRESSURE HOSE, ROUTING THE HOSE AS SHOWN IN FIG. 3 AND TORQUE FITTINGS TO 28 N.M (20 FT.LBS.).

NOTE: PRESSURE HOSE IS ROUTED OVER HEATER HOSE.

6. A. IF CLEARANCE DETERMINED IN STEP 2 IS 40 MM (1 9/16") OR GREATER, RECONNECT THE STEERING GEAR RETURN PIPE, POSITIONING THE PIPE AS SHOWN IN FIG. 2, TORQUE FITTING TO 28 N.M (20 FT.LBS.) AND PROCEED TO STEP 9.

B. IF CLEARANCE DETERMINED IN STEP 2 IS LESS THAN 40 MM (1 9/16"), DISCONNECT RETURN HOSE AT THE RETURN PIPE (ENGINE MOUNTED) AND REMOVE THE HOSE AND STEERING GEAR RETURN PIPE.

7. INSTALL NEW RETURN HOSE TO NEW STEERING GEAR RETURN PIPE, USING CLAMP PROVIDED. INSTALL NEW "O" RING TO STEERING GEAR RETURN PIPE.

8. ROUTE AND POSITION NEW HOSE AND RETURN PIPE AS SHOWN IN FIG. 2 AND 3 AND TORQUE FITTING AT THE STEERING GEAR TO 28 N.M (20 FT.LBS.) AND INSTALL THE HOSE TO THE RETURN PIPE (ENGINE MOUNTED) USING CLAMP PROVIDED.

9. BLEED SYSTEM. REFER TO THE 1980 OMEGA SERVICE MANUAL, PAGE 3B2-5.

10. RAISE CAR AND REMOVE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL AND TIRE ASSEMBLY.

11. USING A ROUND FILE REMOVE THE TWO RETENTION RIDGES ON THE SPACER CLIP REFER TO FIG. 1) SUPPLIED IN THE KIT.

12. GAINING ACCESS THROUGH THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL OPENING, POSITION CLIP BETWEEN THE PRESSURE AND RETURN PIPE AS SHOWN IN FIG. 1 AND LOCK CLIP IN POSITION.

13. REINSTALL RIGHT FRONT WHEEL AND TIRE, TORQUING LUG NUTS TO 140 N.M (103 FT.LBS.) AND LOWER CAR.

14. VERIFY PRESSURE AND RETURN HOSE ROUTINGS AND CLEARANCES AS NOTED BELOW:

A. PRESSURE HOSE TO ACCUMULATOR REFRIGERANT TUBE CLEARANCE 5 MM (7/32"). FIG. 3

NOTE: IF REQUIRED, BEND THE PRESSURE PIPE DOWN AND FORWARD AT THE ENGINE MOUNTED RETAINING CLIP TO OBTAIN REQUIRED CLEARANCE.

B. RETURN PIPE ASSEMBLY TO ENGINE PIPE RETAINING BRACKET POSITION 75MM (3"). FIG. 1

C. RETURN HOSE TO PRESSURE AND RETURN PIPE (ENGINE MOUNTED) 5MM (7/32") FIG. 1

NOTE: IF REQUIRED, BAND THE RETURN PIPE UPWARD AT THE ENGINE MOUNTED RETAINING CLIP TO OBTAIN REQURIED CLEARANCE.

C. CHECK TO BE SURE THERE IS 40 MM (1 9/16:) CLEARANCE BETWEEN EXHAUST MANIFOLD AND STEERING HOSES. FIG. L.

15. INSTALL YELLOW CAMPAIGN CORRECTION LABEL 81-C-3 ON RADIATOR BAFFLE WHERE IT IS READILY VISIBLE.

NON AIR CONDITIONED CARS

1. RAISE HOOD. INSPECT POWER STEERING PRESSURE HOSE ROUTING AND IF CLEARANCE BETWEEN HOSE AND EXHAUST MANIFOLD IS LESS THAN 40 MM (1 9/16") PROCEED TO STEP 2. IF MORE THAN 40 MM (1 9/16") PROCEED TO STEP 9.

2. INSPECT POWER STEERING RETURN HOSE ROUTING TO DETERMINE IF CLEARANCE BETWEEN THE RETURN HOSE AND EXHAUST MANIFOLD IS AT LEAST 40 MM (1 9/16") FIG. 1.

3. DISCONNECT BOTH THE STEERING GEAR RETURN PIPE AND PRESSURE HOSE AT THE POWER STEERING RACK AND PINION GEAR. FIG. 2.

4. DISCONNECT THE PRESSURE HOSE AT THE PRESSURE SENSING SWITCH AND REMOVE.

5. INSTALL NEW PRESSURE HOSE, ROUTING THE HOSE AS SHOWN IN FIG. 3 AND TORQUE FITTINGS TO 28 N.M (20 FT.LBS.)

NOTE: PRESSURE HOSE IS ROUTED OVER HEATER HOSE

6. A. IF CLEARANCE DETERMINED IN STEP 2 IS 40 MM (1 9/16") OR GREATER, RECONNECT THE STEERING GEAR RETURN PIPE, POSITIONING THE PIPE AS SHOWN IN FIG. 2, TORQUE FITTING TO 28 N.M (20 FT.LBS.) AND PROCEED TO STEP 13.

B. IF CLEARANCE DETERMINED IN STEP 2 IS LESS THAN 40 MM (1 9/16") DISCONNECT RETURN HOSE AT THE RETURN PIPE (ENGINE MOUNTED) AND REMOVE THE HOSE AND STEERING GEAR RETURN PIPE.

7. INSTALL NEW RETURN HOSE TO NEW STEERING GEAR RETURN PIPE, USING CLAMP PROVIDED. INSTALL NEW "O" RING TO STEERING GEAR RETURN PIPE.

8. ROUTE AND POSITION NEW HOSE AND RETURN PIPE AS SHOWN IN FIG. 2 AND 3 AND TORQUE FITTING AT THE STEERING GEAR TO 28 N.M (20 FT.LBS.) AND INSTALL THE HOSE TO THE RETURN PIPE (ENGINE MOUNTED) USING CLAMP PROVIDED. PROCEED TO STEP 13.

9. INSPECT POWER STEERING RETURN HOSE ROUTING AND IF CLEARANCE BETWEEN HOSE AND EXHAUST MANIFOLD IS 40 MM (1 9/16") OR MORE, PROCEED TO STEP 14. IF LESS THAN 40 MM (1 9/16") PROCEED TO STEP 10.

10. DISCONNECT THE RETURN HOSE AND STEERING GEAR PIPE.

11. INSTALL NEW RETURN HOSE TO NEW STEERING GEAR RETURN PIPE, USING CLAMP PROVIDED. INSTALL NEW "O" RING TO STEERING GEAR RETURN PIPE.

12. ROUTE AND POSITION NEW HOSE AND RETURN PIPE AS SHOWN IN FIG. 2 AND 3 AND TORQUE FITTING AT THE STEERING GEAR TO 28 N.M (20 FT.LBS.) AND INSTALL THE HOSE TO THE RETURN PIPE (ENGINE MOUNTED) USING CLAMP PROVIDED.

13. BLEED SYSTEM. REFER TO THE 1980 OMEGA SERVICE MANUAL, PAGE 3B2-5.

14. RAISE CAR AND REMOVE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL AND TIRE ASSEMBLY.

15. USING A ROUND FILE REMOVE THE TWO RETENTION RIDGES ON THE SPACER CLIP (REFER TO FIG. 1) SUPPLIED IN THE KIT.

16. GAINING ACCESS THROUGH THE RIGHT FRONT WHEEL OPENING, POSITION CLIP BETWEEN THE PRESSURE AND RETURN PIPE AS SHOWN IN FIG. 1 AND LOCK CLIP IN POSITION.

17. REINSTALL RIGHT FRONT WHEEL AND TIRE, TORQUING LUG NUTS TO 140 N.M (103 FT.LBS.) AND LOWER CAR.

18. VERIFY PRESSURE AND RETURN HOSE ROUTINGS AND CLEARANCES AS NOTED BELOW

A. PRESSURE HOSE TO ACCUMULATOR REFRIGERANT TUBE CLEARANCE 5 MM (7/32") FIG. 3

NOTE: IF REQUIRED, BEND THE PRESSURE PIPE DOWN AND FORWARD AT THE ENGINE MOUNTED RETAINING CLIP TO OBTAIN REQUIRED CLEARANCE.

B. RETURN PIPE ASSEMBLY TO ENGINE PIPE RETAINING BRACKET POSITION 75 MM (3"). FIG. 1.

C. RETURN HOSE TO PRESSURE AND RETURN PIPE (ENGINE MOUNTED) 5MM (7/32"). FIG.1.

NOTE: IF REQUIRED, BAND THE RETURN PIPE UPWARD AT THE ENGINE MOUNTED RETAINING CLIP TO OBTAIN REQUIRED CLEARANCE.

D. CHECK TO BE SURE THERE IS 40 MM (1 9/16") CLEARANCE BETWEEN EXHAUST MANIFOLD AND STEERING HOSES. FIG. 1.

19. INSTALL YELLOW CAMPAIGN CORRECTION LABEL 81-C-3 ON RADIATOR BAFFLE WHERE IT IS READILY VISIBLE.

PARTS INFORMATION

KITS WILL BE SHIPPED TO DEALERS AT NO CHARGE FOR EACH VEHICLE LISTED ON THE PRINTOUT FURNISHED. EACH KIT WILL CONSIST OF THE FOLLOWING:

ONE POWER STEERING PRESSURE HOSE ONE POWER STEERING RETURN HOSE ONE INLET PIPE ONE SPACER CLIP ONE "O" RING TWO SCREW TYPE HOSE CLAMPS

ADDITIONAL PARTS MAY BE OBTAINED FROM YOUR ZONE OFFICE.

WARRANTY CLAIM INFORMATION

DEALERS ARE TO SUBMIT CLAIMS ON THE CAMPAIGN CARD FURNISHED WITH THE PRINT- OUT USING THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION. PARTS CREDIT WILL BE ISSUED AUTOMATICA- LLY ACCORDING TO LABOR OPERATION.

V0560 NON A/C - INSPECT BOTH PRESSURE AND .4 .08 RETURN POWER STEERING HOSES AND INSTALL PLASTIC SPACER CLIP.

V0561 NON A/C-INSPECT POWER STEERING .6 1.44 PRESSURE HOSE, REPLACE POWER STEERING RETURN HOSE AND INSTALL PLASTIC SPACER CLIP.

V0563 WITH OR WITHOUT A/C - INSPECT .8 6.72 P/S RETURN HOSE, REPLACE POWER STEERING PRESSURE HOSE AND INSTALL PLASTIC SPACER CLIP.

V0564 WITH OR WITHOUT A/C-INSPECT AND .8 7.8 REPLACE BOTH POWER STEERING HOSES AND INSTALL PLASTIC SPACER CLIP.

.1 HOUR FOR CLERICAL ADMINISTRATION WILL BE ADDED TO EACH OF THE ABOVE OPERATIONS. TO SUBMIT A CLAIM ON CARS CORRECTED BUT NOT ON YOUR PRINTOUT USE A YELLOW STRIPE CARD.
