QUARTZ SPEEDOMETER EXCHANGE PROGRAM

THE 1985 "C" SERIES STANDARD SPEEDOMETER CONTAINS A QUARTZ MECHANISM. GM IS PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE AN EXCHANGE REPAIR PROGRAM FOR QUARTZ SPEEDOMETERS ON THE 1985 "C" SERIES. THIS PROGRAM PROVIDES REPAIRED QUARTZ SPEEDOMETERS IN EXCHANGE FOR INOPERATIVE ONES AT A COST SUBSTANTIALLY BELOW NEW REPLACEMENT PARTS. QUARTZ SPEEDOMETERS ARE SERVICED BY THE EXCHANGE UNITS LISTED BELOW. (AN EXCHANGE UNIT IS AN ASSEMBLY CONSISTING OF A DIAL, POINTER, MECHANISM, AND CIRCUIT BOARD, TWO ODOMETERS, A MOTOR, SHIFT INDICATOR, AND FUEL GAGE, ASSEMBLED TO A "DUMMY" HOUSING. THE HOUSING HAS NO FLEXIBLE CIRCUIT, CLIPS, LAMPS, ETC.; ITS SOLE FUNCTION IS TO PROTECT THE REST OF THE EXCHANGE UNIT DURING SHIPMENT. TWO SCREWS ALONG THE TOP OF THE EXCHANGE UNIT HOLD ALL COMPONENTS IN PLACE.) EXCHANGE UNITS ARE AVAILABLE FROM THE EIGHT AUTHORIZED AC-DELCO SERVICE CENTERS LISTED IN THIS BULLETIN. AN EXCHANGE QUARTZ SPEEDOMETER MAY BE OBTAINED BY TELEPHONING ONE OF EIGHT SERVICE CENTERS. (FOR YOUR CONVENIENCE, ALL HAVE TOLL-FREE NUMBERS.) THE REQUESTED EXCHANGE UNIT WILL BE SHIPPED VIA UPS WITHIN 24 HOURS, ALONG WITH A MEMO BILLING. THE MEMO BILLING WILL BE CANCELED WHEN THE INOPERATIVE UNIT IS RECEIVED BY THE SERVICE CENTER FROM WHICH YOU OBTAINED THE EXCHANGE UNIT. PLEASE ADHERE TO THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE WHEN A VEHICLE REQUIRES DEALER SERVICE FOR AN INOPERATIVE QUARTZ SPEEDOMETER. 1. FOLLOW THE DIAGNOSTICS PROCEDURE IN THE SERVICE MANUAL PRECISELY AND COMPLETELY. MANY DOUBTS PERCEIVED BY THE OBSERVER TO BE IN THE SPEEDOMETER MAY BE WITH THE REMOTE SENSORS AND CONNECTORS. PROPER DIAGNOSTICS WILL IDENTIFY THE SOURCE OF THE CONDITION AND AVOID UNNECESSARY REMOVAL AND SHIPPING OF FUNCTIONAL ASSEMBLIES TO TO SERVICE CENTERS. 2. WHEN DIAGNOSTICS ARE COMPLETE AND IT IS DETERMINED TO BE IN THE SPEEDOMETER, CALL ONE OF THE SERVICE CENTERS, AND REQUEST THE APPROPRIATE EXCHANGE UNIT. TELL THE SERVICE CENTER THE MILEAGE TO WHICH THE ODOMETER SHOULD BE SET. 3. AFTER THE EXCHANGE UNIT IS RECEIVED FROM THE SERVICE CENTER, REMOVE THE INOPERATIVE SPEEDOMETER FROM THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER. 4. REMOVE THE EXCHANGE UNIT FROM THE REUSABLE SHIPPING CONTAINER. REMOVE THE "DUMMY" HOUSING FROM THE EXCHANGE SPEEDOMETER, AND ASSEMBLE THE SPEEDOMETER TO THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER. USE CARE IN HANDLING THE EXCHANGE UNIT. HANDS MUST BE FREE OF DIRT AND GREASE. AVOID TOUCHING ELECTRONIC COMPONENTS ON THE CIRCUIT BOARD, AS ELECTRO-STATIC DISCHARGE CAN CAUSE SOME COMPONENTS TO FAIL. 5. ASSEMBLE THE INOPERATIVE SPEEDOMETER TO THE "DUMMY" HOUSING AND PACK IT IN THE REUSABLE SHIPPING CONTAINER, TOGETHER WITH ALL FIVE COPIES OF THE COMPLETED ACD-1078 WARRANTY FORM. INCLUDE A DESCRIPTION OF THE SPEEDOMETER CONDITION IN THE "NATURE OF CONDITION" AREA OF THE ACD-1078 FORM TO ASSIST THE SERVICE CENTER IN ISOLATING THE CAUSE. FAILURE TO RETURN THE INOPERATIVE SPEEDOMETER IN THE SPECIAL REUSABLE CONTAINER CAN RESULT IN A $10.00 CONTAINER REPLACEMENT FEE. 6. ENCLOSED IN THE REUSABLE CONTAINER IS AN ADDRESSED SHIPPING LABEL. ATTACH THIS LABEL TO THE OUTSIDE OF THE BOX AND SHIP IMMEDIATELY TO THE SERVICE CENTER FROM WHICH YOU OBTAINED THE EXCHANGE UNIT. THE DEALER COPY OF THE ACD-1078 WARRANTY FORM WILL BE RETURNED TO YOU AND THE MEMO BILLING CANCELED UPON RECEIPT OF THE INOPERATIVE UNIT AT THE SERVICE CENTER. THE SUCCESS OF THE QUARTZ SPEEDOMETER EXCHANGE REPAIR PROGRAM IS DEPENDENT UPON PROMPT RETURN OF THE INOPERATIVE SPEEDOMETER TO THE SERVICE CENTER. YOUR COOPERATION IS ESSENTIAL TO MAINTAINING SUFFICIENT QUANTITIES OF EXCHANGE STOCK. WHENEVER THIS CLUSTER IS EXCHANGED, IT WILL BE NECESSARY TO REMOVE THE ODOMETER FROM THE ORIGINAL CLUSTER AND TRANSFER IT TO THE REPLACEMENT CLUSTER. WHEN THIS IS REQUIRED, THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE SHOULD BE USED: 1. REMOVE THE INOPERATIVE CLUSTER FOLLOWING THE SERVICE INFORMATION MANUAL PROCEDURES ON PAGE 8C-20 OF THE 1985 FWD DEVILLE AND FLEETWOOD SERVICE MANUAL. 2. REMOVE THE TWO (2) ILLUMINATION BULBS FROM THE GEAR SELECTOR INDICATOR. 3. REMOVE THE TWO (2) SCREWS ATTACHING GEAR SELECTOR INDICATOR TO THE CLUSTER HOUSING AND REMOVE THE GEAR SELECTOR INDICATOR FROM THE HOUSING. 4. DISCONNECT THE FLEX CIRCUIT CONNECTOR FROM THE INTERNAL CIRCUIT BOARD. 5. REMOVE THE SIX (6) SCREWS ATTACHING THE CLEAR LENS TO THE HOUSING. REMOVE THE LENS AND BLACK BEZEL. 6. SEPARATE THE HOUSING FROM THE BLACK (SPEEDOMETER FACE) COMPONENT BOARD BY LIFTING THE BOARD STRAIGHT OFF THE LOWER DOWEL PINS. 7. TURN THE COMPONENT BOARD OVER AND REMOVE THE TWO SCREWS ATTACHING THE ODOMETER FRAME TO THE HOUSING. SEE FIGURE 1. 8. BEFORE REMOVING THE ODOMETER FRAME FROM THE HOUSING, GRASP THE DRIVE LINK (SEE FIGURE) WITH NEEDLE NOSE PLIERS TO KEEP THE LINK (SEE FIGURE) WITH NEEDLE NOSE PLIERS TO KEEP THE LINK ATTACHED TO THE TRIP ODOMETER. REMOVE THE ODOMETER FRAME WITH THE DRIVE MOTOR ATTACHED. THE PLIER GRIP CAN BE RELEASED AND THE DRIVE LINK WILL REMAIN IN PLACE. 9. TURN THE ODOMETER FRAME OVER AND REMOVE THE RETAINING CLIP FROM ONE END OF THE ODOMETER SHAFT. WITH THE CLIP REMOVED, SLIDE THE ODOMETER ASSEMBLY TOWARD THE CLIP END AND REMOVE THE ODOMETER FROM THE FRAME. 10. REINSTALL THE ODOMETER FRAME INTO THE INOPERATIVE CLUSTER. TO INSTALL THE REPLACEMENT CLUSTER: 11. REMOVE THE TWO (2) SCREWS SECURING ODOMETER FRAME TO THE COMPONENT BOARD OF THE REPLACEMENT CLUSTER AND SEPARATE. 12. INSTALL THE ODOMETER ASSEMBLY INTO THE FRAME AND REPLACE THE RETAINING CLIP. NOTE THE POSITION OF THE GROOVE IN THE ODOMETER ASSEMBLY AND ROTATE THE TRIP ODOMETER DRIVE LINK TO THAT POSITION BEFORE INSTALLING THE ODOMETER FRAME ONTO THE COMPONENT BOARD. TO REINSTALL THE ODOMETER ASSEMBLY ONTO COMPONENT BOARD, ENGAGE THE DRIVE LINK WITH THE GROOVE OF THE ODOMETER ASSEMBLY AND SLIDE THE ODOMETER ASSEMBLY ONTO THE DRIVE LINK AND LOCATING PINS OF THE COMPONENT BOARD. 13. REINSTALL THE ODOMETER FRAME TO THE COMPONENT BOARD WITH TWO (2) ATTACHING SCREWS. 14. REINSTALL THE BLACK (SPEEDOMETER FACE) COMPONENT BOARD LOCATING IT ON THE DOWEL PINS. 15. REINSTALL THE BLACK BEZEL AND LENS AND SECURE WITH THE SIX (6) ATTACHING SCREWS. 16. CONNECT THE FLEX CIRCUIT CONNECTOR TO THE INTERNAL CIRCUIT BOARD. 17. REINSTALL THE GEAR SELECTOR INDICATOR USING THE TWO(2) ATTACHING SCREWS. 18. REINSTALL THE TWO GEAR SELECTOR INDICATOR ILLUMINATION BULBS. 19. REINSTALL THE CLUSTER ASSEMBLY FOLLOWING THE SERVICE MANUAL PROCEDURES ON PAGE 8C-21.
