INSUFFICIENT WARM AIR REWORK DRIVER SIDE DUCTING

MODELS/YEARS: 1985 NINETY-EIGHT

A condition may be experienced on some early 1985 Ninety-Eight models involving a left to right side heater output imbalance. This can result in the driver's left foot feeling cold.

The condition can be repaired by the following service procedure:

1. Disconnect battery negative cable.

2. Remove lower instrument panel close out panels and heater duct.

3. Remove instrument panel cover, speedometer cluster, instrument panel trim and parts necessary to remove distribution duct assembly.

4. Remove air distribution duct assembly.

5. Carefully peel back seal from heater evaporator module (see Figure 1) to expose rivets for "flag" baffle (see Figure 2). Be careful not to tear seal.

6. Center punch two rivets and drill out with 7/16" drill. Remove "flag" baffle.

7. Cut 1 1/4" square piece off bottom of baffle (see Figure 2).

8. Cut off bottom 1/4" of temperature door internal perpendicular lip (see Figure 3). Cut off only from side exposed.

9. Reinstall revised "flag" baffle and securely pop rivet in place.

10. Put seal back in place, reassemble duct work and instrument panel, and connect battery.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
