A/C MOAN NOISE OFF IDLE INSTALL COMP. TORQUE DAMP.

MODELS/YEARS: 1985 NINETY-EIGHT

CONDITION

A moan type noise may be experienced on some early production cars at off idle engine speeds with the air conditioning compressor engaged. The noise disappears when the air conditioning is turned off.

CAUSE

The noise is caused by resonance of the compressor clutch cover due to one of two reasons:

1.Improper torque of the three (3) dust cover screws.

2.Clutch drive plate spring rattle.

CORRECTION

Tighten the compressor clutch cover screws to 4-5 N-m (30-40 lbs. in.). If noise remains, install kit no. 2724325. This kit contains a torque dampened clutch hub and drive plate assembly and dust cover. If after installing the kit the moan is not corrected, it will be necessary to follow normal compressor diagnosis to correct the condition.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
