GM Service Manual Online
For 1990-2009 cars only

The keyless entry system allows the driver to do the following functions from outside the vehicle by using a hand held radio transmitter.

    • Unlock door locks. The courtesy lights activate automatically when using this function.
    • Lock door locks.
    • Release the rear compartment lid.
    • Remote alarm.

The transmitter operates in the UHF band. The transmitter sends digitally code signals to the Remote Control Door Lock Receiver (RCDLR) when pressing any of the transmitter buttons.

The RCDLR detects and decodes transmitter signals. For locking, unlocking, and remote alarm commands the RCDLR sends command messages to the Body Control Module (BCM) to operate the door locks actuators, courtesy lights and remote alarm.

For rear compartment lid release command, the RCDLR sends a direct signal to the rear compartment lid release relay to operate the rear compartment lid release actuator.

Door lock, lighting and rear compartment lid release systems can also be operated in the usual manner. For instance the door locks respond to the door lock switches.

The keyless entry system can be programmed with up to four keyless entry transmitters.

Body Control Module (BCM)

The Body Control Module (BCM) controls the door locking, interior lighting and remote alarm portions of the keyless entry system. Refer to Body Control System Description in Body Control System for more information regarding the BCM.

Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)

The Remote Control Door Lock Receiver (RCDLR) sends door locking and remote alarm command messages to the Body Control Module (BCM) through the RFA link.

The BCM may set these DTCs related to the keyless entry:

    •  DTC B2802 RFA Link Circuit Shorted to Ground
    •  DTC B2803 RFA Link Circuit Shorted to B+
    •  DTC B2805 RFA Programming Message Not Received
    •  DTC B2806 RFA Link Parity Error

Refer to Body Control Module Diagnostic Information in Body Control System for more information.

Keyless Entry Functions

  1. Remote driver door unlock: The driver's door unlock when pressing the unlock button on the keyless entry transmitter.
  2. Remote all door unlock: All doors unlock when pressing twice (or more) the unlock button on the keyless entry transmitter.
  3. Remote all door lock: All doors lock when pressing the lock button on the keyless entry transmitter.
  4. Rear compartment lid release: The rear compartment lid opens when pressing the rear compartment button on the keyless entry transmitter.
  5. Remote activation verification: The headlamps flashes and/or the horn sounds when using the keyless entry transmitter. Refer to Remote Activation Verification System Operation for more information.
  6. Remote alarm: The headlamps flashes and the horn sounds alternately for two minutes when pressing the alarm button on the keyless entry transmitter. Pressing the alarm button again within tow minutes stops the remote alarm.

Remote Driver Door Unlock

The RCDLR sends a message to the BCM through circuit 917 to unlocks the driver's door upon pressing once the unlock button on the keyless entry transmitter.

Remote All Door Unlock

The RCDLR sends a message to the BCM through circuit 917 to unlock all doors upon pressing twice (no more than 5 seconds between presses) the unlock button on the keyless entry transmitter.

Remote All Door Lock

The RCDLR sends a message to the BCM through circuit 917 to lock all doors upon pressing twice the lock button on the keyless entry transmitter. However, the automatic door locks controls door locking as follows:

    • The BCM will not lock the doors when the lockout prevention feature is active.
    • The BCM delays door locking when the last door closed locking feature is active.

Refer to Power Door Locks Circuit Description in Doors for more information regarding lockout prevention and last door closed locking feature.

Remote Alarm

When pressing the alarm button the keyless entry transmitter, the RCDLR sends a message to the BCM through circuit 917 to flash the headlamps and sound the horn alternately for two minutes. To stop the alarm, press the alarm button again. The remote alarm is disabled when the ignition switch is on.

Rear Compartment Lid Release

When pressing the rear compartment button on the keyless entry transmitter, the Remote Control Door Lock Receiver (RCDLR) grounds circuit 253. This action energizes the rear compartment lid release relay, thus applying voltage in circuit 56. Then the rear compartment lid lock release actuator energizes, releasing the rear compartment lid.

If the transaxle is shifted out of PARK, voltage supply in circuit 275 to the rear compartment lid release relay is interrupted. This action disables the rear compartment lid release feature.

Courtesy Lights Activation

The BCM turns on the courtesy lights when unlocking the doors using the keyless entry transmitter. Refer to Interior Lights Circuit Description in Lighting Systems for more information.
