The exterior lighting system includes the headlamps, and daytime running lamps, cornering lamps, backup lamps, fog lamps, license lamps, side marker lamps, front parking/turn signal lamps, tail/stop/turn signal lamps, high-mounted stop lamp. This system also includes all wiring, controls and related hardware required for the proper operation of these lamps.
The headlamps are controlled by the headlamp switch located on the turn signal and headlamp dimmer switch. Turn the end of the turn signal and headlamp dimmer switch lever to the first position will turn on the parking/turn signal lamps. Turn the end of the turn signal and headlamp dimmer switch lever to the second position will turn on the headlamps. The high-beam headlamp operation is controlled with the turn signal and headlamp dimmer switch lever on the steering column. To change headlamp operation from low-beam to high-beam (or high-beam to low-beam), pull the turn signal and headlamp dimmer switch lever to the full back position (until the detent is felt) and release. The high-beam indicator (blue) in the instrument cluster will light during high-beam headlamp operation. The turn signal and headlamp dimmer switch lever can also be used to flash to pass. In order to flash to pass, pull the turn signal and headlamp dimmer switch lever back until both low-beam and high-beam headlamps are lit - but not past the detent. Low-beam headlamp operation will resume by releasing the turn signal and headlamp dimmer switch lever to its original position. A warning chime will sound if you open the drivers door when you turn the ignition switch to OFF, LOCK or ACC with the headlamps on.
The Daytime Running Lamps (DRL) system consists of a DRL module, DRL sensor and BCM. Two relays, a DRL relay and a HEAD relay, are integral to the DRL module. The system is designed to automatically operate certain exterior lamps, depending on outside light conditions, whenever the ignition switch is in the RUN position. The system operates in both a DAY and a NIGHT mode. In the DAY mode, the turn signal lamps are lit at full brilliance. In the DAY mode and turn signal switch on, the turn signal lamp will flash normally. In the NIGHT mode, the headlamps are lit at full brilliance along with the front park/turn signal/side marker lamps, and the tail lamps. DAY and NIGHT modes are determined by the signal from the DRL sensor. The DRL sensor is a photosensitive element - a variable resistor that reacts to changes in light intensity. The DRL module monitors the signal from the DRL sensor and determines whether the system should operate in the DAY or NIGHT mode. When the DRL module is in the DAY mode, the DRL relay is pulled closed and voltage is applied through the module to the turn signal lamps. At nightfall, as light intensity decreases, the DRL sensor signal changes. In response to this change, the DRL module will change from DAY to NIGHT mode as a switching point is crossed. When NIGHT mode is initiated, the DRL relay is opened and the HEAD relay is pulled closed. Under these conditions, the headlamps, parking lamps and tail lamps receive full system voltage and operate at full brilliance. If the parking brake is applied before the ignition switch is turned from OFF to RUN, DRL operation is canceled. This function allows the driver to start the engine and keep the headlamps or turn signal lamps off - as long as the parking brake is engaged. DRL system operation resumes as soon as the parking brake is released. This deactivation feature only functions when the parking brake is applied before the ignition switch is turned to RUN. If the parking brake is applied after the ignition switch is turned to RUN, DRL system operation will not be affected.
The fog lamp switch is located in the upper, left side of the instrument panel. To turn on the fog lamps, your parking lamps must be on then press the fog lamp switch. A light will glow on the switch to let you know the fog lamps are on. Press the fog lamp switch to turn off the fog lamps. The fog lamps will go off whenever the high-beam headlamps are turned on and when you return to low-beam headlamps the fog lamps will come on again.
The front parking/turn signal lamps are located in the LH and RH headlamp capsules. These lamps can be operated at any time by turning the end of the turn signal and headlamp dimmer switch cruise control actuator and windshield washer and wiper lever When a turn is signaled, the appropriate front parking lamp flashes to signal a turn. The turn signals operate only with the ignition switch in RUN and will not operate during hazard flasher operation.
The front side marker lamps are located on the sides of the headlamp capsule. These lamps will light whenever the following conditions are met:
• | Headlamp or parking lamps ON. |
• | If the headlamp or parking lamps are OFF when a turn is signaled, the appropriate front side marker lamp will flash in unison with the front turn signal lamp. |
• | If the headlamps or parking lamps are ON when a turn is signaled, the front side marker lamp and front turn signal lamp flash alternately. |
The tail lamps, stop lamps and rear turn signal lamps are all incorporated into the rear tail lamp. The tail lamps are lit whenever the parking lamps or headlamps are in operation. The rear turn signal lamps flash with the front turn signal lamps whenever a turn is indicated with the turn signal/headlamp dimmer switch. The stop lamps light whenever the brake pedal is depressed and the stop lamp switch is closed.
The backup lamps are located in the tail lamps. These lamps will light whenever the following condition is met:
Ignition switch in the ON positioned and the transaxle in reverse.
There are two styles of the high-mounted stop lamps depending on the option package. The high-mounted stop lamp is located either in the center of the rear window on the shelf or in the rear end spoiler. The high-mounted stop lamp lights whenever the brake pedal is depressed and the stop lamp switch is closed.
The license lamps are located in the rear compartment lid under the rear compartment lid trim. Whenever the headlamp or parking lamp switch is turned, the lamps lights.
The interior lighting system includes side rail lamps and convenience lamps such as the compartment lamp, lighted rearview mirror and visor vanity mirror lamp. All associated wiring, controls and related hardware for these lamps are also included.
Two courtesy lamps under the instrument panel will come on when a door is opened, or when the interior lamps are turned on. To turn on the interior lamps, slide the lever to the right of the lamp switches all the way to the top.
The instrument panel compartment lamp will come on when the instrument panel compartment door is opened.
On vehicles so equipped, the lamps next to the visor mirror will come on when the mirror cover is raised.
The side rail lamps will come on when a door is opened, or when the inside lamps are turned on. There is also a switch in the side rail lamp to turn the side rail lamp on or off.
The rear compartment lamp will come on whenever the rear compartment lid is opened.
The courtesy lamps will come on and stay on for a set time whenever you press the unlock button on the remote keyless entry transmitter. If you open a door the lamps will stay on while the door is open and then turn off automatically about 25 seconds after you close the door. If you press the unlock button on the remote keyless entry transmitter and don't open a door, the lamps will turn off in 40 seconds.
