Removal Procedure

Universal Steering Linkage
- Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Loosen the tie rod end ball stud nut (3) from the outer tie rod end (5).
- Loosen the tie rod jam nut (2).
- Separate the outer tie rod end 5) from the steering knuckle (4) with
J 24319-B
.
- Remove the tie rod end ball stud nut.
- Remove the outer tie rod end ball stud from the steering knuckle.
- Remove the outer tie rod end (5) from the inner tie rod (1).
Installation Procedure
- Install the outer tie rod end (5) to the inner tie rod (1). Do not tighten the jam nut.
- Install the outer tie rod end ball stud (5) to the steering knuckle (4).
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the outer tie rod end ball stud nut (3) to the outer tie rod end stud (5).
Tighten
- Tighten the outer tie rod end ball stud nut to 30 N·m (22 lb ft) to seat the stud.
- Tighten the outer tie rod end ball stud nut an additional 120 degrees.
- Visually inspect to ensure that 2½ - 4½ threads are visible past the nylon washer.
- Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to
Wheel Installation
in Tires and Wheels.
- Lower the vehicle.
Important: Do not twist the rack and pinion boot during toe adjustment.
- Adjust the toe by turning the inner tie rod. Refer to
Wheel Alignment Specifications
in Wheel Alignment.
- In order to set the wheel alignment specification tighten the jam nut.
Tighten
Tighten the jam nut against the outer tie rod to 70 N·m (52 lb ft).
