Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the engine mount struts at the engine. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement and Engine Mount Strut Replacement in Engine Mechanical.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  3. Place the drain pan under the power steering (PS) pump and the power steering gear.

  4. Object Number: 417969  Size: SH
  5. Remove the return hose from the PS cooler pipe.
  6. Remove the intermediate shaft lower bolt. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement Steering Wheel and Column-Tilt.
  7. Insert a large flat-bladed tool into the intermediate shaft clamp area slot.
  8. Twist the flat-bladed tool in order to spread the intermediate shaft clamp area.
  9. Remove the intermediate shaft from the steering gear.
  10. Use a utility stand in order to support the frame rear.
  11. Remove the frame rear bolts. Refer to Frame Replacement in Frame and Underbody.
  12. Use the utility stand in order to lower the frame rear to gain access.
  13. Remove the power steering gear heat shield. Refer to Steering Gear Heat Shield Replacement .

  15. Remove the power steering gear hose clip.
  16. Remove the PS cooler pipe from the steering gear.

  17. Object Number: 417929  Size: SH
  18. Remove the PS cooler pipe retainer bolt.
  19. Remove the PS cooler pipe retainer.
  20. Remove the PS cooler pipe from the retainer on the frame.
  21. Remove the PS cooler pipe.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the PS cooler pipe.

  2. Object Number: 417929  Size: SH
  3. Install the PS cooler pipe to the retainers on the frame.
  4. Install the PS cooler pipe retainer.
  5. Install the PS cooler pipe retainer bolt.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the PS cooler pipe retainer bolt to 6 N·m (53 lb in).

  7. Install the PS cooler pipe to the steering gear.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the power steering gear cooler pipe fitting to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).

  9. Install the power steering gear hose clip.
  10. Install the power steering gear heat shield. Refer to Steering Gear Heat Shield Replacement .

  12. Install the return hose to the PS cooler pipe.
  13. Use the utility stand in order to raise the frame rear.
  14. Install the NEW frame rear bolts. Refer to Frame Replacement in Frame and Underbody.
  15. Install the intermediate shaft to the steering gear.
  16. Install the intermediate shaft lower coupling bolt. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column-Tilt.
  17. Lower the vehicle.
  18. Install the engine mount struts at the engine. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement and Engine Mount Strut Replacement in Engine Mechanical.
  19. Fill the power steering fluid reservoir. Refer to Checking and Adding Power Steering Fluid .
  20. Bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .
  21. Inspect the system for leaks. Refer to Power Steering Gear and Pump Leaks .
