GM Service Manual Online
For 1990-2009 cars only

A vehicle that has rotors with excessive lateral runout can exhibit brake pulsation or a shudder condition during braking.

Inspect the lateral runout with the wheels on the vehicle in order to get a more accurate reading of the Total Indicated Runout (TIR) under real braking conditions. If the equipment is not available to perform the check with the wheels on the vehicle, remove the wheels with the caliper in place in order to get an accurate reading.

Tools Required

J 8001 Dial Indicator Set

  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Important: Before performing the brake rotor lateral runout check, inspect the hub and bearing assembly for looseness and excessive runout.

  3. Refer to Wheel Bearings Diagnosis in Suspension General Diagnosis.

  4. Object Number: 378519 Size: SH
  5. Remove the tire and wheel. Refer to Wheel Removal in Tires and Wheels.
  6. Install and fully seat the wheel nuts in order to securely retain the rotor.

  7. Object Number: 219564 Size: SH
  8. Fasten the J 8001 to the knuckle. Ensure that the indicator button contacts the rotor surface about 13 mm (0.500 in) from the outer edge.
  9. Set the dial indicator to zero.
  10. Turn the wheel one complete revolution. Inspect the runout indicated on the dial.
  11. • If the TIR exceeds 0.080 mm (0.003 in), go to Step 8.
    • If the TIR is less than 0.080 mm (0.003 in), go to Step 13.
  12. Mark the relationship of the rotor to the hub.
  13. Notice: Whenever the brake rotor has been separated from the wheel bearing flange, clean any rust or foreign material from the mating surface of the rotor and flange with the J 42450 hub cleaning kit. Failure to do this may result in increased lateral runout of the rotor and brake pulsation.

  14. Remove the brake rotor.
  15. • For the front rotor replacement procedure, refer to Front Brake Rotor Replacement .
    • For the rear rotor replacement procedure, refer to Rear Brake Rotor Replacement .
  16. Clean any rust or foreign material from the mating surface of the rotor and the hub.
  17. Install the brake rotor on the hub, one or two bolt positions from the rotor's original position. Repeat Steps 5 through 8.
  18. If the TIR still exceeds 0.080 mm (0.003 in), refinish or replace the rotor as necessary.

For rotor refinishing, refer to Brake Rotor Refinishing .

  19. Remove the wheel nuts securing the rotor to the hub.

  20. Object Number: 378519 Size: SH
  21. Install the tire and wheel. Refer to Wheel Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  22. Lower the vehicle.
