Removal Procedure
Tools Required

Stud/Joint Separator |
Notice: Use only the recommended tools for separating the ball joint from the
knuckle. Do NOT hammer or pry the ball joint from the knuckle.
Failure to use the recommended tools may cause damage to the ball joint and
seal.
- Raise the vehicle and
suitably support the vehicle by the frame. Allow the control arms to hang
free. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to
Wheel Removal
in Tires and Wheels.
- Remove the steering gear outer tie rod from the steering knuckle.

- Remove the stabilizer shaft link from the control arm. Refer to
Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement
- Disconnect the ABS speed sensor jumper harness.
- Remove the control arm mounting bolts.
- Remove the cotter pin.
- Loosen the nut from the ball stud.
- Separate the front lower control arm ball stud from the steering
knuckle using the J 41820
.
- Remove the control arm from the frame.
Installation Procedure
- Install the control arm
to the frame.
- Install the control arm mounting bolts and nuts.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the front
lower control arm ball stud-to-knuckle and the front lower control arm ball
stud nut.
Tighten
Tighten the front lower control arm ball stud-to-knuckle nut to 20 N·m
(15 lb ft) + 120 degrees.
- Align the slots to the front lower control arm ball stud nut with
the cotter pin hole by tightening the nut. DO NOT loosen the nut in order
to align the holes for the cotter pin.
- After the cotter pin installation, the bent ends of the cotter
pin MUST NOT face the ABS wheel speed sensor or the drive axle.
- Install the front lower control arm ball stud cotter pin.
- Install the steering gear outer tie rod. Refer to
Steering Knuckle Replacement
- Install the stabilizer shaft link to the control arm. Refer to
Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement
- Install the ABS wheel speed sensor jumper harness.
- Tighten the control arm mounting nuts with the weight of the vehicle
supported by the control arms.
Tighten
Tighten the control arm mounting nuts to 104 N·m (77 lb ft).
- Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to
Wheel Installation
in Tires and Wheels.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Adjust wheel alignment. Refer to
Wheel Alignment Measurement
in
Wheel Alignment.
