Coolant

Caution: Under some conditions, Ethylene Glycol in engine coolant is flammable. To avoid being burned when adding engine coolant, do not spill it on the exhaust system or on hot engine parts.

Notice: Pure coolant can be added to raise the boiling point of the coolant, but too much will affect the freezing point. Do not use a solution stronger than 70 percent, as the freeze level rises rapidly after this point. Pure coolant will freeze at -22°C (-8°F).

Engine coolant is a mixture of two liquids, DEX-COOL® and clean, drinkable water.

GM Goodwrench DEX-COOL® (GM Specification 6277M) is a developed engine coolant that is designed to last for 241,350 km (150,000 miles) or 5  years, whichever occurs first. Ensure that only GM Goodwrench DEX-COOL® is used when you add or change the coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .

A 50/50 mixture of DEX-COOL® and water will provide the following benefits:

    • Freezing protection down to -37°C (-34°F)
    • Boiling protection up to 129°C (265°F)
    • Rust protection
    • Corrosion protection
    • Helps keep proper temperature
    • Allow the warning lights and the gauges to work as designed

Sealer

Add sealant pellets (GM P/N 3634621) to the radiator whenever the following conditions occur:

    • Minor water pump seepage or other leaks can not be corrected through normal service procedures
    • The coolant system is drained and refilled with fresh coolant
    • The water pump is replaced
