The aluminum die-cast coolant pump is a centrifugal vane impeller type. The impeller is pressed on a steel shaft that rotates in a permanently lubricated ball bearing. The impeller is located on the inside of the pump. A hub is pressed onto the exterior end of the shaft. The hub has a pulley bolted onto it that is driven by a drive belt that is rotated by the engine.
Engine coolant is drawn into the pump from the engine, heater core and radiator. The pump impeller creates pressure that forces engine coolant through the engine block, cylinder heads and on back to the heater core and radiator.
