WINDSHIELD WIPER CHATTER AND WIPEABILITY SERVICE PROCEDURE

SUBJECT: WINDSHIELD WIPER BLADE CHATTER/WIPEABILITY CONCERNS CAUSED BY CHANGE IN BLADE ANGLE- (INSTALL SPACER)

MODELS/YEARS: 1982-88 FIRENZA COUPE

Some 1982-88 Firenza coupes may experience driver side blade chatter and wipeability concerns.

IMPORTANT: Before doing any work, clean windshield and both blades with GM windshield cleaner, PN 1050011 or equivalent. Then, recheck wiper-washer operation. If problems persist after cleaning, follow the procedures in this bulletin.

CAUSE:

------ Some vehicles have a wiper housing mounting tolerance condition that changes the attack angle of the driver side blade assembly and can cause blade chatter and wipe problems.

CORRECTION:

----------- Install spacer, Package #22111290, over driver side linkage housing. See the illustration on the back of this bulletin. Make sure spacer is correctly oriented. Parts are currently available at GMSPO.

Install new screws provided finger tight, then torque evenly to 8 N.m (70 lbs.in).

NOTE: When reassembling cowl, make sure that washer hose is reconnected (and not pinched).

If an interference condition results between the wiper arm head casting and the cowl clearance hole, use a file to enlarge hole at interference point.

A revised, all metal wiper blade with six pressure points is available which may correct most wipeability concerns. This design replaces the four point pressure point design. Replace both blades with P/N 22110234.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
