CAMPAIGN: ENGINE / ECM HARNESS MISROUTED

1986 CUTLASS CIERA MODELS EQUIPPED WITH A 3.8L (LG3) ENGINE

CONDITION

General Motors has determined that some early production 1986 Cutlass Ciera models equipped with 3.8L (LG3) engines may have been assembled with the engine ECM wiring harness misrouted. This may result in the wiring harness shorting against the exhaust manifold in the engine compartment. This condition could cause engine starting problems and poor engine performance.

VEHICLES INVOLVED

Involved are some early production 1986 Cutlass Ciera models equipped with 3.8L (LG3) engines within and including the following vehicle Serial Numbers:

The following six (6) vehicles built at the Oshawa Assembly Plant (PLT. 9) are also involved.

DEALER ACTION

To prevent this condition from occurring, dealers are to inspect and, when required, reroute and/or repair the engine wiring harness.

Dealers are to service all vehicles subject to this campaign at no charge to owners, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership, from this time forward.

Whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign is taken into your new or used vehicle inventory, or it is in your dealership for service in the future, you should take the steps necessary to be sure the campaign correction has been made before reselling or releasing the vehicle.

Owners of vehicles recently sold from your new vehicle inventory are to be contacted by the dealer and arrangements made to make the required modification according to instructions contained in this bulletin.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Open hood and disconnect the negative battery cable.

2. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.

3. Remove the right front wheel assembly.

4. Disconnect the engine harness from the starter solenoid.

5. Disconnect the A/C high pressure cutoff switch, A/C compressor clutch, and A/C head pressure switch connectors from the A/C compressor.

6. Pull the A/C and starter wiring harness back toward the dash panel. Reroute it over and outboard of the power steering inlet hose assembly as shown in the illustration.

7. Inspect the wiring harness for melted areas near the main harness branch. Repair as necessary.

8. Reinstall the wiring harness under the engine.

9. Reconnect the starter solenoid and A/C compressor connections.

10. Reinstall the wheel assembly.

11. Lower the vehicle.

12. Disconnect the fuel injector harness connector and the computer controlled coil ignition module connector. Refer to illustration.

13. Reroute the harness outboard of the heater hoses as shown in the illustration.

14. Reconnect the fuel injector and coil ignition module connectors.

15. Reconnect the negative battery cable.

16. Install "Campaign Identification Label" according to instructions contained in this builetin.

17. Close hood.

CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL INSTALLATION

Each vehicle modified in accordance with the instructions outlined in this procedure will require a Campaign Identification label. Each label provides a space to include the campaign number, the five (5) digit dealer code of the dealer performing the campaign service, and the date the vehicle was campaigned. This information may be inserted with a typewriter or ballpoint pen. When installing label, clean the surface of the radiator upper mounting support and apply the campaign label where it is readily visible.

PARTS INFORMATION

When required, material used in making repairs to the wiring harness, such as tape, wire, or wire connectors, are to be obtained from the dealership parts department.

.1 hour for clerical adminstration may be added to the above operation.

*An additional .1 of an hour labor may be added if the vehicle is equipped with air conditioning. If wiring harness repair is performed, an additional labor time allowance of up to .5 of an hour may also be added.

A parts allowance of up to $2.00 may be submitted for in the dealer material allowance column (sublet column) of the warranty claim to cover such items as tape, wire, or wiring connectors, when wiring harness repair is required.
