TEA KETTLE TYPE WHISTLE OR HIGH PITCH WHINE NOISE FROM ENGINE (REPLACE ENGINE OIL PUMP)

SOME 1989 CUTLASS CALAIS MODELS BUILT IN SEPTEMBER,1988, EQUIPPED WITH A QUAD 4 (LD2) ENGINE

CONDITION:

---------- Some September built 1989 Cutlass Calais models with a 2.3L Quad 4 engine, prior to engine unit number D181098, may exhibit a tea kettle type whistle or high pitch whine noise with a warm engine in the 900 to 1400 RPM range.

NOTE: The month and year of vehicle manufacture is printed on the vehicle certification label. This labor is located on the rear face of the driver's door.

Refer to the following illustration for engine unit number label location.

CAUSE:

------ This noise is a result of a high frequency resonance created within the oil pump assembly. This condition does not affect the durability or performance of the oil pump.

CORRECTION:

----------- This condition can be corrected by replacing the engine oil pump, part number 22538689. Parts are expected to be available on November 14,1988. Until then normal part orders will not be accepted by GMSPO. Only verifiable emergency VIP orders will be accepted. GMSPO will make every effort to obtain parts. All parts will be placed on 400 control to waive VIP surcharges. However, the part will be shipped premium transportation at dealer's expense. All other order types will be canceled as incorrectly ordered while the 400 control is in place.
