Important: A short to ground will cause open fuse(s). Before performing this diagnostic procedure, Inspect the fuse(s) for an open.

  1. Ensure that the gear selector is in PARK.
  2. Measure voltage between the starter solenoid terminal S and ground with a DMM.
  3. Hold the ignition switch in the START position.

Is voltage measured within the specified range?

B+

Go to Step 3

  1. Disconnect the transaxle range switch connector C1.
  2. Measure voltage between terminal G of the transaxle range switch connector C1 and the ground with a DMM.
  3. Hold the ignition switch in the START position.

Is voltage measured within the specified range?

B+

Go to Step 4

Go to Step 5

Replace the starter solenoid. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement .

Is the repair complete?

System OK

Measure resistance between terminal E and terminal G of the transaxle range switch with a DMM.

Is resistance measured within the specified range?

0-2 ohms

Go to Step 6

  1. Backprobe the underhood junction block with a DMM
  2. Measure voltage between terminal F11 of connector C3 and ground.
  3. Hold the ignition switch in the START position.

Is voltage measured within the specified range?

B+

Go to Step  8

Repair the open in circuit 6 between the transaxle range switch and the starter solenoid. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Is the repair complete?

System OK

Check the adjustment of the transaxle range switch. If OK, replace the transaxle range switch. Refer to Park/Neutral Position Switch Replacement in Automatic Transaxle - 4T40 - E/4T45 - E.

  1. Backprobe the underhood junction block with a DMM
  2. Measure voltage between terminal A11 of connector C1 and ground.
  3. Hold the ignition switch in the START position.

Is voltage measured within the specified range?

B+

Go to Step 10

Go to Step 16

  1. Backprobe the ignition switch with a DMM and
  2. measure voltage between terminal A of connector C2 and ground.

Is voltage measured within the specified range?

B+

Go to Step 11

Repair the open in circuit 5 between the underhood junction block. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Is the repair complete?

System OK

  1. Backprobe the ignition Sswitch with a DMM and
  2. Measure voltage between terminal B of connector C1 and ground.
  3. Hold the ignition switch in the START position.

Is voltage measured within the specified range?

B+

Go to Step 13

  1. Backprobe the underhood junction block with a DMM.
  2. measure voltage between terminal A of connector C4 and ground.

Is voltage measured within the specified range?

B+

Go to Step 15

Repair the open in CKT 5 between the ignition switch and the underhood junction block. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Is the repair complete?

Replace the ignition switch. Refer to Ignition and Start Switch Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges and Console.

Repair the open in CKT 842 between the ignition switch and the underhood junction block. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.
