Removal Procedure

Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Drain and recover the coolant.
  3. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .

  4. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls - 2.4L or Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.1L.
  5. Disconnect the surge tank line from the coolant outlet.

  6. Object Number: 181846 Size: SH
  7. Disconnect the coolant outlet from the inlet manifold attaching bolts.
  8. Remove the coolant outlet.

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 181846 Size: SH
  1. Connect the coolant outlet to the inlet manifold.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the attaching bolts.
  4. Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  5. Install the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls - 2.4L or Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.1L.
  6. Connect the surge tank line to the coolant outlet.
  7. Tighten
Tighten the fitting to 21 N·m (15 lb ft).

  8. Fill the engine with coolant.
  9. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .

  10. Connect the negative battery cable.
  11. Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 16 N·m (12 lb ft).

  12. Inspect the system for leaks. Refer to Cooling System Leak Testing .
