J 41688 Centering Sphere Installer

1. Install the joint preload spring (2) into the centering sphere (1) using J 41688 and grease with lithium grease.



2. Compress the centering sphere and joint preload spring. Rotate the driver 90 degrees in the clockwise direction until the arms lock in place.



3. Install the upper shaft assembly.
4. After the race and upper shaft assembly is firmly attached to the centering sphere, rotate the shaft 90 degrees downward locking the centering sphere in place.



5. Remove the centering sphere installer and the race and upper shaft assembly from the vise.
6. Disassemble the tool by separating the base. After the tool is disassembled, the shaft while the attached sphere can be removed.



7. Install the race and upper shaft assembly to the lower shaft assembly and lubricate with lithium grease.
8. Tilt to 90 degrees to each other and engage.




Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

Important: If the support assembly already has 3 sets of staking, then replace the support assembly and the pivot pins.

9. Install the steering column support assembly to the steering column jacket assembly with 4 Torx® head screws.

Tighten
Tighten the screws to 17 N·m (13 lb ft).




10. Install the steering shaft assembly to steering column support assembly and steering column jacket assembly.



11. Install the adapter and bearing assembly (1) to steering column jacket assembly. Position the tab on the adapter and bearing assembly with the slot in steering column jacket assembly and push together.
12. Install the lower bearing seat (2).
13. Install the lower bearing spring (3).
14. Install the lower spring retainer (4).

When installing, compress the lower bearing spring to the length of 23.5MM +\- .5 MM between the lower bearing seat and the lower spring retainer.




15. Install the sensor retainer (1).
16. Install the steering shaft seal (2) to the end of steering shaft assembly.
17. Install the upper tilt head components. Refer to Steering Column Tilt Head Housing - Assemble - Off Vehicle .
